cableguy

In Twang We Trust
I have been seeing these more and more frequently. Any comments on these amps? :scratch2:
EDIT: Gainclone, not cone.....

We did a group build on them a couple years ago. I still have all of the parts and still haven't started to build but one of these days....I'm gonna jump right on it. Just as soon as all of my other amps take a leave of absence at the same time :D

I have one that I use in the hot summer months with a passive. It sounds darn nice with the Tannoy's. I did not build mine but had the guy hook mine up for a 16 ohm load. Simple and nice, but not a tube amp IMO.

The solid state section of DIYAudio.com seems to be the place for all things Gainclone.

I stay in other sections though...those transistor types make me skurred...

:D

Well never being one with any patience I went ahead and bought one of these today. I wanted to know and soon I will. I am intrigued by the simplicity if these unusual amps. I'll let you all know some time next week how this all pans out.

Well I have been listening for a couple of hours and you know what....I just may have stumbled upon something here. This a very musical amp, I am liking it so far. Very, very detailed and super clean. It's late so I won't snap any pictures tonight, but it is a somewhat small & unassuming looking home/DIY project with a plexi-glass top so you can look in to see what little is going on inside. This thing isn't supposed to sound this dam good, but it does. This is looking like perhaps one of the better sub $100.00 purchases I have made ($99.00 shipped to me). More to follow when I get a little more time...

where'd you get yours, cableguy? they look so simple to build that i have even thought about doing one meself, but...$99?

I have been very happy with the LM3875 "gainclone" I built.

I like to perouse Audiogon, and that's where I found this one. Tim Rawson was the builder.....

Pics...
One of the very minimalist "guts", and one of the amp sitting on top of my Denon PRA 1000 preamp. I told you these wasn't much to it. This really throws a wrench into that part of my brain that tells me bigger is better regarding amps. This thing sounds very good, super transparent, clear mids, crisp highs & excellent bass...... Who knew???:dunno:

I built one like Wardsweb. Same kit, some $4 resistors and a hand full of Black Gate caps.

If the site will allow it, I will post a picture. Usually it tells me the picture is in another thread. The one that Wardsweb refers to.

What are your impressions?:scratch2:

It replaced my modded ST-70. Then I got some Triangle speakers and Bottlehead Paramour power amps. I prefer the Paramours, although the bass was deeper and better defined on the GC.

I believe, the "chip amps" section is actually dedicated to all things gain clone.

Surprising amount of traffic on it too.

Gain clones are not only a good place to start, they seem to be a good place to end as well.
