Steam Cleaner on sale at Walgreens

It's used by some to clean LP's, not me though or maybe windwalker needs to get some kinks out?:D

I have been using one for LP's aquired that needed a real good cleaning. It works great and I just treat the steam portion of cleaning as a rinse.

My routine is a bit more elaborate. First I mount the record on Merrill's GEM Dandy, then I steam, apply cleaner, rinse with high pressure water hose, and finish with another steam.

What no Vacuum?

After further 'research' online and a little experimentation, I think the only thing needed is to add that last vacuum stage, and possibly a pre-soak with bacterial or enzymatic cleaner, and that will be a "state of the art" cleaning.

Combining a couple cycles of spritz (on an ezyme or bacterial cleaner), sit (let it sit a while for the cleaners to do their thing), re-spritz (with regular LP cleaning solution), steam, scrub (carbon-fiber brush and/or microfiber cloth), rinse-spray (with GEM water cleaner), repeat the entire cycle, and finish with VCR vacuuming using PURE water.

Should give the best results you can hear from your vinyl, at this time. :thmbsp:

I figured out how to put this entire cycle in one automated machine, but not sure if I want to spend the time bothering to build it, as you can do most of this "on the cheap" and by hand, and save the hassle of automating it. Probably not worth attempting to do it commercially, either, as the costs would be high, and there aren't many nuts out there who would pay THAT much for a better RCM.

This is a nice deal. I haven't used it for vinyl yet but messing with it it does a great job on cracks and crevices.

Steam Cleaner

What do you use for liquid, tap water? Must be like putting the LP in a suana to clean out the pores. I'll be checking out Walgreens this evening for a steam cleaner.

That particular unit was on sale at Overstock.com for less than $50. It is said to work as good as the Walgreens Perfection unit which I have and used.

The whole story about steam cleaning is at Audiogon in a long thread which explains the method and where Crem1 ( the suporter behind steaming) talks about a few histories ( Mappleshade included). It is a fun and interesting reading.

No, don't use tap water. Tap water has many impurities. Get the cleanest water that you can - triple distilled, DI, etc. You don't want impurities clogging the cleaner or the small grooves in your records.

Actually, the impurities should remain behind out of the steam in the solution. That's the whole basis for distilling water.
I'd be very leery about any system/solution claiming that the cleaning agents are present in the steam. The steam WILL do the job; just don't expect it to containing anything besides water.
