Wow, an in the flesh Setton RCS-X1000 from 1977! :sigh:

One of the only Setton components I don't have, and figured I'd never see good pictures other than from a brochure! So what is the scoop on the acquisition, did you find it in Germany?

Regards,
Mike

Bravo!

I found it in Paris actually.. Drove there last sunday to pick it up together with Axel.

It is partially functioning: the tuner is not responding, and sound from inputs is very, very low.. At least optical condition is nice, I'd even say very nice! And that is more important to me for now. The only thing which is bugging me: one of the FM preset knobs (in the right lower corner) is missing.

the serial of the control number is 34, main unit is serial 26.. how about low numbers huh??

Very nice piece of equipment! Awesome design. Actually, the most awesome design concept I have ever seen.

:tresbon:

Wow. I want one, and will start looking for it. Oh dear.

Fantastic find and I guess Axel's theory of less than 100 still holds true as the one in Germany was #89. The last one that I saw any photos of was in Thailand, it was pretty rough, but looked like it was all there.

So did you get it from the original owner? If so, they must have had some nice gear in order to fork over $3500.00 USD 33 years ago!

I agree, cosmetics first then get the electronics in order. Shoot I'd even try my hand at making a mold and fabricating a new button.

BTW, is that what the seven button are on the bottom? If you look at the brochure and at the photos Axel has at TVK, there is just a plate with the Setton logo on it and another with the buttons.

Regards,
Mike

 It is indeed a great piece of design, it looks stunning!

Good luck with your quest; let me warn you, finding this thing will be next to impossible.. I have only ever seen another one for sale, of which I wasn't even shure if it really was for sale.
It was located somewhere in Thailand a few years ago, I did actualy tried to contact the owner at that time, but had no succes.. This time I did however:thmbsp:

Looks like we were on the same trail, as that listing still shows up when I search. BTW, it looks like you were quick to move as the ad for yours was only listed on Friday! :thmbsp:

Mike,

It was actually the second time he adverted the thing: first time was earlier this month.. I already contacted the seller about two weeks ago or so..

I was thinking the same thing about the knob; getting one custom mad might actually be my only option... It will be hard to get it the right color.. Well, I am not in a hurry, we'll see how it works out.. I'll show some pics of the inside later on as well.

the Pics you can see on tvk of the unit without the button in the lower right corner is the preproduction model. It seems the presets on that one are adjusted with the tuner knob, where you must separately adjust each preset on the production model with these 6 knobs, there is also a muting knob down there actually..

This unit came with the key to power the unit on/off.. I must say It's quite a cool thing to have a key to power your gear :smoke:

are you sure that is not an icbm launch control? uber cool!

I might have to check, maybe there are some hidden features which I haven't found out yet :D

I will be cleaning up the mainbox tonight, Think it will come out nice and clean just like the controlcenter..

Wow, that is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever seen. I wish I hadn't seen that. I've seen other Setton pieces and they all have elegance and sophistication but that no words can describe. I guess I will also be looking now too. Damn!

That thing is the Setton RCS.X.1000 control center.

It is in fact a preceiver: tuner and preamplifer in one. It's made out of two pieces; the control unit you see on the pictures, and a main unit holding all the connectors as well as the powersupply. They are connected to eachother with a very big flatcable.

It was Setton's statement piece back in the 70's It is made for just one reason: to impose and show off! In those days it was terribly expensive with a list price of 10600 german marks!! So obviously they didn't sell very much, or better to say: most probably they only sold a few.. It seems there were only a hundred or so made of these ever..

You can find some more info on it at TVK.

All that is missing is a "remove before flight" red ribbon tag on that key.

I am very impressed. Inspirational piece of equipment, I know I'm repeating myself. Wow.
