2252B and a 250?

vivavinyl

wax on, wax (not) off....
hey friends

was wondering if some of you could offer an opinion on using my 2252B as a pre-amp and running it through a 250 power amp? pros, cons....etc

many thanks:thmbsp:

c'mon ak'ers, surely someone has an opinion or some insight to using a 2252b as a preamp for a 250?!?!?!?:scratch2:

I think it would make a great preamp/tuner. I consider my 2252B one of the best receivers I have. That includes HK-730s and a Marantz 2270 among others. The tuner section is very nice and the sound is clean and punchy.

The thing is....I would hate to waste the nice amp section on the 2252B. That is one of it's strong points! You could split the preamp out with "Y" cables and run the 250 with one leg and come back to the 22552B with the other leg and use them both. Hook a more efficient pair of speakers to the 2252B. You could then use them together or either/or. That way you don't toss away a nice 52 watt amp. I have a system set up that way. You get to use more stuff! good Luck! Franksta

Here's a thought... First are your speakers biwire/biampable? Second, does the 250 have volume control? If you could set up both amps to have exactly the same output you could passively biamp your speakers.
Use the 250 for the woofers and the amp in your 2252b for the tweeters. Just remember to remove the jumpers on your speakers first.

hey folks
thx for the input

to answer some questions - yes, the speakers are bi-wirable. the 250 only has speaker inputs, source inputs and two knobs to select VU meter display - no volume control. if i ran a y as suggested, would i be able to control the volume with my 2252b and use the 250 for the woofers and the 2252b for the tweeters?

thanks again:thmbsp:

It's pretty hard to biamp if you don't have control of the outputs of the amplifiers in question. Yes the 2252B controls the entire volume but the amps themselves would need to be matched perfectly otherwise you screw up the woofer to tweeter relationship that was intended. There is a way you could test to see exactly how close the amps sections are in sensitivity. Set a tripod with a meter in front of your speaker and don't move it. Send some pink noise through one of your amps and measure the db's (take note) Switch amps and do the same thing not touching the main volume or the meter and use the same speaker cable. You might be lucky and both amps are exactly the same but you won't know until you measure.
