2285B recap & binder post conversion

Okay, I wound up with one screw that has fine threads on it, and one small, black, very thin washer. See the attached picture (also shows a nickel for scale). I think I must have put in a similar size screw, with more coarse threads on it, into a place where this screw with fine threads should have gone. Anyone know where that might be? I'm thinking this because I am also missing a similar size screw to this one, but with more coarse threads on it.

I can't remember where the thin little black washer goes, but maybe on the selector switch extender bar that has the two lock rings on it?

Ideas anyone?

I've ordered lights that I will install later, plus vellum, plus I'll give all the knobs, glass etc, a good cleaning. Getting close !!

That's a very impressive adapter plate for those caps! I like it! Those caps can definitely breathe! Beautiful work JBLman! I looked at my photos and didn't come up with a location for the screw. The washer looks about the right size to go on one of the front swithces, did you have the face plate assembly off?

Okay, just turned on my receiver for the first time. After about 15 seconds I had some fireworks. Cap C801 was installed backwards and so, it was forced to release all of its smoke. Haha. Ordered another one from Digikey. Glad they deliver so quickly.

Jerry, yes! I did have the face plate off. I can check to see if one of the switches is supposed to have a washer like that on. Thanks!!

More after I fix C801 and retest.
 
A question for anyone. When you first turn on the Marantz 2285B receiver, after about a second or two you hear a click. Should it always do that if it is working properly, even if it has no speakers attached to it?

Randy, you didn't have to match me tit-for-tat and put a cap in backwards. The idea is that you would learn from my mistakes not test them yourself! I hope you didn't injure anything else, I was lucky and only had to replace the cap. As far as the relay click when you power up, I believe it does not require any sort of a speaker load you just have to satisfy the circuits.

Success!!!!!

All right! I replaced the blown up cap, powered up the receiver, heard the relay click in (YES!!) and then just let the receiver sit there for 10 minutes to see if anything else would explode. Nothing did.

Next, I set the Idle Bias and DC Offset. The initial numbers I was seeing on my DVM were already close but I fine tuned them and everything worked perfectly.

Put the case back on, tuner string still not hooked up. I will adjust it when I go back in to clean the face plate and knobs, and put in the new lights and vellum.

I took the receiver home, plugged it into the rest of my system (with new RCA jacks on both my receiver and my JBL 166 speakers). Popped in one of my favorite Mark Knopfler CDs, hit play on the CD player and prayed for sound. Well OMG, my system hasn't sounded so good in a very long time!! Absolutely fantastic!!! I am so happy!! I can't believe how good it sounds!!

Congratulations! It really feels good to pull off a re-cap on one of Marantz's larger receivers. One thing, I should have done a little more thoroughly after blowing that cap; go back with denatured alcohol and clean everything. I think I am still getting some smell from the spray off of that cap. Have fun with that tuner string, it can be a little perplexing but you've done very well so far. I'm sure you'll handle it! Get her lit up, and please do share some pics! Enjoy! :thmbsp:

Marantz 2285B Full ReCap List Plus Install Notes

Just in case it might help someone else, here is my cap list for the recap, plus some notes I made during the process. I used a total of 95 caps, and I purchased them all through Digi-Key Canada. I think Digi-Key Canada has a slightly worse selection of caps available than Digi-Key USA.

The two Panasonic FC caps I ordered for C801, and C802 were changed to Nichicon PW caps by Digi-Key when they filled my order (see attached Cap List pdf). In any case, I think more high grade caps are available through Digi-Key USA.

Please also remember that your Marantz 2285B may not be exactly the same as mine. Boards changed over time and from country to country. Anyway, here it is.

Always, always one cap at a time. I had a sansui (and others) that had an incorrect silkscreen +/- and had a hell of a time.

I just got a 2285B - :yes:
But my power push switch seems to have problem.
Can you please compare mine and yours to find out if mine is original part or not.
After putting some Deoxit into the hole, I think the switch looks short circuited now - my house loses power as soon as I turn it on.
(The fuse of 2285 does not work why?)
It would be great if you can show the photo of your power switch inside.

My receiver is not easily unhooked from its location. If any one else has a 2285B on the bench Pauljuhn could use some help with the power switch. I did not do much with mine other than a cleaning. I do have one question, are you sure that it was thoroughly dry before plugging the power cord back in? Any fluid could have caused a short. If no-one steps in I will have some time when the weather changes to pull mine and investigate. One more thing, I've read on other units that the power switch was replaceable with one from Digikey or Mouser. Good luck! I'll keep tabs on responses.

Mine does not have orange color box(cap?).
The switch itself looks same though.
I am searching for this switch all over the Internet space but no lock yet.
Mine is European version.
 
Oh, sorry, the Euro versions have a different suppressor (orange cap) set up, but the switch should be similar.
