Spent many days at Cubi Point, Saratoga! What a great place for a sailor. My original squadron (VAW-13) had a detachment there and would always put us up after a night in 'Po town. Had to take the Cattle Car from the gate back to Cubi Point.

How about Grande Island? Ever snorkel that reef?

Rick

I was Stationed at San Miguel about 30 miles north of Subic. I was there for 2 years (68-70) I bought a very old honda 450 and got to see a lot of the Island. Never got to Grande, but I did a lot of scuba diving off the Caponi's near San Antonio and spent quite a bit of time in Iba.

Cool. If you scuba those reefs I'll bet there's nothing better. My 1 day experience snorkeling blew my mind. Have NEVER seen anything even close since.

San Miguel, isn't that where they make that good beer?

Building a house at Lake Tahoe as my summer job between junior and senior years at San Jose State. Catching The Dead, Doors, Steppenwolf, and others , on the weekend, at the tiny King's Beach bowling ally down the road. What a long strange trip it's been.

I was 6 years old and I remember Martin Luther and Bobby Kennedy getting shot. I also remember the Chicago Democratic Convention. It was a terrible year (except for the music), but the saving grace was watching Apollo 8 circle the moon.

I'm glad all you veterans made it back safe and sound. :thmbsp:

I was a hippie back then with all the answers.I was going to change the world with my friends. On weekends I would work in my lab in the basement of my parents house with tons of electronic equipment and lots of high voltge wires around so no one would come in my room. That may have been around the time I was experimenting with 500,000 volt tesla coils. The glass cap I had made out of a old window and alum foil exploded but before it did I knocked out t.v. reception in the neighbourhood. No one could figure out where the interference was coming from but my parents were supicious.:D

That list brings tears to my eyes.... WHERE DID THE MUSIC GO TO?

I was eight years old back then....

I had just come home from serving 15 months in Korea, in the Army.

I was thirteen - man that was a long time ago.

Some great music here. You know I had totally forgotten about Jose Feliciano. That was a great song. I do remember listening to most of this stuff on my cheezy record player. Classical Gas was another good one, along with Born to be wild. Heck they're all good. I think I can still hear my mother telling me to turn it down :music:

I was up at San Miguel about 20 miles north of PO for two years (68-70) I used to scuba up in that area around some small islands called the Caponies (sp) about 3 miles out from San Miguel. I took that "cattle car" once back to San Miguel, after that I bought an old honda 450.

working for the post office in DC before beginning my junior year at UMD. that list of songs sure speaks to me of the difference between then and now.

Wow, it's been 40 years already? Where did the time go? I was in my first year out of H.S. so was probably working, can't remember where. My dad just got back from Vietnam in 67 and got to see me graduate.
Was playing Archie Bell and the Drells "Tighten Up" in the Soul Band I played in. Driving around in my 60 Chevy Impala and listening to those tunes on the 8 track and radio with reverb! Going out with girls, didn't meet my 1st wife until the next year. Had some good times back then!

1968- I was 11, just starting to get interested in at least not throwing rocks at the girls anymore..My dad bought his farm in Surgoinsville that year, we spent most of that summer & fall cleaning up stuff around it. Mama had a 1967 Mercury Colony Park station wagon, it had that magic-door tailgate, Daddy had a 250 SE Mercedes sedan, & a '66 Chevy truck to go to the farm in. We had a GE Porta-Color, I had a Sony 5-303 5" B&W, & maybe that 1st "good" Sony all-in-one. Our house wasn't air-conditioned, we had a HUGE Fedders window unit in Mama & Daddy's bedroom that rocked & shook the whole house when you turned it on...

August, 1968 - Just settling in to start two and a quarter years with the 327th Army Band in Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland after enduring Basic Training at Ft. Benning and six months at the Navy School of Music in Norfolk, VA. where I learned to play my clarinet the Army Way...as loud as possible.

As for the songs:

"People Got To Be Free" - A noble sentiment, but too many performers were abandoning fun rock to ride the popular introspective, folk, flower hugging hippie thing making the rounds at that time. What ever happened to "Good Lovin'"?

"Born To Be Wild", Hello, I Love You" - Yes! Keeping the rock flame alive!

"Light My Fire" - Sorry, liked The Doors' version better.

"Classical Gas" - Spanish classical guitarist Andres Segovia seemed to be getting attention at the time. And then along came Mason Williams with "Classical Gas". I liked the song. Still have the 45. My Billboard book says he was a comedy writer for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

"Sunshine Of Your Love" - I liked the song, but it sounded a little thin done by a trio. To my ears, two more in the band would have helped a lot.

The Vogues, & The Fifth Dimension - Seemed to like anything they put out.

I can't seem to remember songs 9 and 10 (proof I was around in the '60s?). But I do have Archie Bell's "Tighten Up".

The '60s was a great music decade. I mourn it's passing.

In 1968 I was listening to Herb Alpert on Dad's Ampex 1100 RTR and McIntosh MC275.
Speaking of Jose, wasn't that the same year he did that radical version of The Star Spangled Banner at the World Series?

Those were the days!! I lived in Chicago and was 12 years old in 68'. I lived in the old Hippie neighborhood Old Town/Lincoln Park area. Head shops, music stores, bars, music. Always something going on down there. The Democratic Convention, anti-war demonstrations, the south & west side riots. My dad had a small rubber stamp shop and would take me on deliveries with him downtown. I saw some of the demonstrations and riots when we delivered the stamps. The National Guard had all their army vehicles all over the loop. We had a little AM converter rubber banded to a transistor radio and listened to all the police dispatches in the evening. I feel very lucky to have experienced that era. Hendrix, Doors, Beatles, Cream, Mothers of Invention, Blue Cheer, The Who, Soul Music, Bubblegum, Psychedelic, you never what was coming next.

In 68 I was in Germany, doing a 3 year tour wearing green. It was a magical time, some good, some not so good. I got to see the Doors, Janis Joplin, Canned Heat, the Stones and a bunch of others while there.

I also discovered what was then known as Hi-Fi. I still remember my Sansui speakers, SP-100s as well as an AU-555 and TU-555 plus a Dual 1019 turntable. The beginning of my audio oddessy among others.

We all thought the good music would go one forever.... who could predict disco... etc.

40 years ago I was Michael Bloomfield's road manager and spent my time listening to some of the best blues and R&B I've ever heard.

I was ten years old living in Chicago listening to Am radio WLS/WCFL:yes: On the family's Longer then a car Magnavox console stereo:
Same.. and look where I live.
In 1968 I was listening to Herb Alpert

Same. At 14, I was torn between sports and girls. Try staring at the girl next to you in 8th grade and not having the courage to ask her out:drool:. (And she knew it). Andrea...Wound up in a vocation.

Frankly, there is only one song on that list any good..maybe 2.
