Where were you in August 1968?

Akron. :)

We had just moved into a new house, so I was getting ready to enter 3rd grade at a new school.

That was back when you could smell the rubber companies every morning as the wind blew to the west. I thought it smelled terrible, but one of our neighbors once said, "No, it's a good smell. It smells like money."

Doing what a 4 year old would do, playing kids records on my little turntable :D

I already had my 1st component system. :)

Collaro turntable with a Stanton cartridge, W-3M Heathkit amp and matching preamp, plus the matching AM tuner. The speaker was an 8" Utah with whizzer cone.

I was 12 and listening to all those songs on the radio. I think I was already trying to play Classical Gas on the guitar. Not very well. It would have helped if I had known how to fingerpick...:scratch2:

Wow, compare that list

to the dreck in the top 10 today! What a difference - and they wonder why CD sales are down...

BTW, I was 8, and probably lighting something on fire (I was a bit of a pyro).

In the Cleveland area in 1968, most young people were listening to WIXY 1260 AM.

Yep, WIXY. We had just got an FM radio and there wasn't much on it I was interested in, except WRUW, Case Western Reserve University's radio station.

Ah yes,

What dots........all I can remember is colors.....lots of colors, :D and smiling 'til your cheeks hurt. :lmao: Oh yea. I remember.

Smiling 'till your cheeks hurt. CAN remember that :D :D :D

And driving all the way to 1/2 Moon Bay (from SF) in third gear and keeping up with the traffic - didn't know until I went to downshift and was already there. Damm, that yellow snake in the middle of the road can get your attention :scratch2:

I was 12 and listening to those songs on a little transistor radio except when I went to my grandfathers house. He had a system that consisted of a Dynaco tube power amp that he built, a Scott tube pre and a Garrard TT played thru a pair of huge Webcor speakers. I remember that he had a large collection of big band records that sounded great. I knew then that I wanted a component stereo system for myself. I bought my first stereo components when I was 18 and still have some of them.
I also remember thinking that I would be going to Vietnam in a few years when I was drafted. Thanks to all of the guys who went ahead of me, I didn't have to go. They ended the draft just a few months before I would have been eligible. I'd also like to thank all of the Ak'ers who did serve our country and I'm glad you made it back too.

16 and taking the driving part of Driver's Ed. KXOK out of St. Louis (top 40) had "Classical Gas" in *heavy* rotation. Just the thought of it puts me behind the wheel of that car, cruising the back roads around Jacksonville, IL, with Mr. Campbell (gym teacher, basketball coach, driving instructor) trying to keep me from steering into bridge abutments...

The driving instructor I had in High School was a young very pretty blonde. I pulled up to a red light, and some guys in the car next to us started yelling crude things. I turned a brighter red than the traffic signal. :)

Where were you in August 1968?

I had just come home from serving 15 months in Korea, in the Army.

Playing all these songs on the radio station that I worked for, WXMT AM/FM, and celebrating my birthday too!

to Hi-fi nut: Light My Fire WAS an original Doors song. Feliciano did a cover of it. He was very popular then.

Just a couple of months later, Feliciano sang the national anthem at the World Series - Jose can you see - frequently referred to as one of the best ever renditions of that song. (I'm not a big country fan, but Trace Adkins did an amazing job in the 2006 rematch of the Cards-Tigers Series. The Series turned out better in '06 than '68).

Back on topic - I was eleven and in love with baseball and rock 'n roll. Two worthy purposes for my trusty transistor radio. Maybe that's why I favor receivers over integrated amps?

That top ten list is an amazing collection. Thanks for the memories.

Regards,

D-Ray
