'80's rock bands that sucked & still do......

Can this list be complete without Hall and Oates? I thought they REALLY sucked. While I'm at it I would also nominate Supertramp, Flock of Seagulls, Eagles, Loggins and Messina, REM, as among the most overrated, sappy, ear grating, migraine producing bands of the era.

Big Country - Steeltown (1984)....

found it in my Collection... worth keeping, worth listening??

Never could understand the REM thing, sure, the 12- string was refreshing and Michael Stipe had zits, but it was done mucho better 20 years before...
 
Sorry guys, I like LoverBoy. Think of this: cutting across the bays of South Texas on a barge being pushed by a tug boat with Loverboy blaring, on a good stereo, You Take Me to the Top. I guess you had to be there - but that's an 80's memory for me. And I'm a 53 year old guy. Don't fxxx w/ Texas.

Yeah I remember them...Casablanca records was promoting them as the next "Kiss". The only song I remember from that LP is "Telephone Exchange". Could that have been a sign of the musical apocalypse?? :scratch2:

Wooooooooooooo Rush!! I own all their albums on both vinyl and CD, and I'm praying for an SACD or DVD Audio release someday. I'll gladly spend all that money all over again to hear those! In the meantime there's a new album coming out this fall which I am excited anticipating.

Anyways, back to your regularly scheduled topic...
 
I think of the '80's as the beginning of "corporate rock". When I started buying music, most music stores were combination record store and head shop. You could buy your records and all the tools to make a good fatty in the same place. But the stoner behind the counter knew music forward and backward.

Then came the 80's, and the large retail chain music stores started pushing the little guys out. But it also changed the way music was sold. Different demands were placed on the music industry by the retailers, who were less interested in the virtuosity of the music and more interested in how quickly they could churn their inventory.

Think of the groups that were significant in the '70's and died in the '80's. Emerson Lake and Palmer comes to mind. Remember that horrible album "Love Beach"? There were any number of groups that wandered away from their roots due to the pressures by the music industry to change their approach to music in order to "sell".

This is why I have high hopes for digital downloads. It allows the artist to create their own ditribution channel, and hopefully music will benefit from it.
 
This thread is a scream! Virtually everyone hates some band that someone else loves. Of course, if we all had the same taste in music, we would only need one band. For the record, Springsteen, REM, and the Eagles (and their solo offspring), were some of my favorites. On the other hand, Foreigner, Loverboy, and pretty much all of the hair bands sucked the grand wazoo (which, by the way, was an interesting album by FZ and the Mothers, but that was in the 70s). And I've always hated Rush, ever since I went to a concert with a bunch of friends and a buddy's wife was hitting on me big time. I got in trouble over that, and the concert sucked too.
 
I agree with Doodledog, I guess us dogs need to stick together. I have an appreciation for good music and bad music, if that makes any sense. I like something from virtually every bad band mentioned, even, Cluture Club. But with that said, I wouldn't put any of those bands into the Dave Matthews, REM, U2 and The Drive By Truckers category. I dare anyone to take a list of the bands mentioned, load them up onto their CD/MP3/Windows Media Player, drink three beers, press play hit shuffle. There is almost no music ever made that cannot be enjoyed after three beers.

Whew, glad you didn't mention Twisted Sister specifically. I really used to like them. I havn't really kept up with this thread much. I'm sure all of the stuff I like/liked has been slammed already. I'm gonna go with Ugly Kid Joe's philosophy on this one: I hate everything.

Because I grew up in the 80s, some of my first exposure to music was in the form of pop music of time. Before I even knew about the palm sisters or about Turning Japanese, there were The Pointer Sisters, Twisted Sister, the Wilson sisters and Mister Mister.

Rock over London, rock on Chicago, you may be my lucky star.

I was already grown up, but i saw what happened to good 70ies bands in the change of the decades and, in Germany, there was one of the horriblest things going on, the "Neue Deutsche Welle" - what was a poppy derivate of New Wave..... :thumbsdn:
except some very few bands like Daf, Fehlfarben, Extrabreit or similar a real desaster.... including NENA :banana:

Yeah I remember Licorice Pizza..Right across the street from the Junior Hi School lol.....I remember being there the day Dark Side of the Moon was released. Bought the LP and of course they threw in some licorice AND a fistful of papers :smoke:
 
Agreed... 99%. But if it weren't for Poison's "It's Just a Sexual Thing" some of us may never have gotten laid. :smsex:
