Your not buying it for it's accurate musical reproduction. Your buying it because its a rare vintage classic, and Pioneer's biggest and baddest. You got the money and you probably lusted after it when you were younger. It's just money. If it makes you happy, why not!

That's nothing, paid 152K to have my house built, neighbor just sold for 464K (ridiculous, but Amazon's largest warehouse just moved in). I think the receiver price is high, someone on FB Market had a fully restored Marantz 2500 and was asking $5K, he got flamed to death. I sided with the seller though I wouldn't spent that much, don't need that much power.

I can remember around the time Ebay started their dancing people commercials in 03 the 1980 could be had for $1200, even less.
I knew one guy who got a Marantz 2500 at a pawn shop for $90 thirty years ago. And he sold it for $1600 in 2010, and got paranoid near the end of the auction because he wasn't getting the bids and accepted an offer. I watched the unit sell on Ebay at the time. I told him that was dumb. Guy talks a mile a minute. Haven't seen him in a loooong time.

Exactly. I think that is a very comparable example to people paying big $$ for vintage TOL receivers.
The shipping price is not that far off.. When I sold my Marantz 2275 a few months ago it cost $135 to FedEx it from ABQ to Phoenix (475 miles). The package weighed just under 50 lbs, and a Pioneer SX-1980 weighs 78 pounds without packaging.

I remember that.
Last year one sold $20K. It was as new in box- albeit opened.
Not unlike the muscle car market of $500,000 - $1,000,000 cars: Everywhere when new > 99% were trashed > T-I-M-E > large audience of those who remembered/wanted them new now wants one.
Classic supply and demand.

A high quality rebuild with a new power supply board can cost 2k plus on top of a 7k receiver. Seems like prices are getting really high for this one.
I have 2 fully rebuilt.
Pretty soon there won't be enough donor units to clean up
The ugly parts people want to replace.
Why part out a unit and get 2k when you can spend 2k to fix it and get 10k for the unit.
hundreds of dollars for cables is chicken scratch, there are cables that sell for hundreds of dollars per inch lol.
As for "finding an amazing pair" to find out, I recently had that opportunity on the cheap (read free).
When I purchased my Well Tempered Lab Turntable a couple of yrs ago the eBay ad mentioned phono cables were included, but no picture of said cables were supplied so I didn't think much of it.
The seller lived on the Fl west coast, I on the east, so we met 1/2 way, seller didn't want to ship.
These were the cables "thrown in" with the deck "for free", looked them up on line to find their value, I paid less than 1/2 this for the whole table, with a new in box Sumiko cartridge also thrown in.
As for how it sounds? Well I never tried the table with different cables so can't say how big a part the cables play in the tables SQ, but it's on another playing field when compared with my other tables which many would consider endgame decks.
