1980 close to me on FB that the owner wants 15k.
Nothing is surprising anymore except there is eventually another person dumb enough to pay these prices.
Or merely wealthy enough…
Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.I expected this response but it still doesn't make any sense to me. $15k can buy you so much amplifier that isn't 50 years old and doesn't need service/rebuild. Krell, Mac, etc. the list goes on. Enthusiasts with 100k+ vinyl setup aren't running them off a Pioneer 1980.
I get the nostalgia factor, the looks, etc but you can get the sound at a fraction of the price. Maybe less than 1% of people actually need 270w? This bubble can't burst fast enough.

who says they don't already have all that gear and just want this receiver also
Jay Leno completely restored his old Fiat X19 and has it in his collection, also a bunch of Stanley Steamers![]()

View attachment 2534050 Maybe it's me, but I have a hard time believing that this re,ceiver is going to sell for this price. Plus a $200 shipping cost on top of it? I've seen these posted for $3k and thought that was outrageous!
I sold a nice 8" feild telescope on eBay and I shipped it from AZ to WV and it cost me $80, box was just under the max size allowed. Average cost I paid to ship receivers back East (including a monster NEC that was wider, taller and deeper than any receiver I ever saw before) was around $35 to $40 using Fed-Ex. Insurance is usually pretty cheap to add extra, not sure if they'd agree on the value if it was damaged though.
Not sure what these sold for when new, but $9,200 will buy you a pretty good new receiver that will out class this in every way. I doubt many people would be looking for a "receiver" if they were spending that much, but I think you get my point.
To answer the OP's question, I'd be surprised if it sells for $9000
BUT if it's been totally recapped/restored by a reputable repair person, and has original packaging and paper work, who knows.
Looks like it's in a "clean home" in the images provided, to me that means a little. As opposed to being in a pickup bed outside a self store storage room.
It only takes one person who wants it and has the expendable money.
The people buying these don't give a **** about whether or not the sound quality is better for less money . It doesn't need to make sense, the only thing that matters is that someone will pay the price. To some people 10k is not even the cost of the carpet in the room where the receiver sits. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.I expected this response but it still doesn't make any sense to me. $15k can buy you so much amplifier that isn't 50 years old and doesn't need service/rebuild. Well there is a seat for every ass. What matters to you may well not matter to me or someone else, the audience here consists of every budget and taste. People paying what you feel is an outrageous sum for these monster receivers are not buying them for the sound quality, They know there is better sound they just don't care because they are not buying them to listen too. Many collectors will buy something that is new and sealed in a box and never open it, there are collectors like that on this forum as well. once they buy it will never flip the switch to the on position or plug it into a receptacle.I’m not debating any of the posts in here and I don’t care how people spend their money, but folks are missing my point. If people with plenty of disposable income want a 1980 then go for it. The only point is that there are lots of other alternatives that are better options for what a receiver is actually meant to do for much less than 15k. That’s what I would expect to matter to the audience here. There’s way too many people into gear now who just want the clout from posting it on instagram, Facebook, etc.

I can remember when I sold my first SX-1980 for 2k people commented that the person who bought it was stupid and I thought I had done well considering I paid $200.00 for it but today I cant buy a broken one for 2k so who was stupid me or the guy bought it? Here's a few pics of it.

This is fact!......I was in the whiskey business for many years and can without pause say that people would pay what I called ludicrous prices for a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle solely to say they had it and to show off to their pals....and I have seen Pappy 23 sell for MORE than a $9000 receiver.....to each his own, more power to those with the dust to do it!
