A/D/S line pecking order?

I would definatly fill those ladies up! "may even pay for the gas"

Yah the 880's I have with a single 10" woof get great bass. It's not just a bass tone
but you get the texture of the intruements with it, very very nice.

Hi all. Great site you have here. I recently picked up a set of ads 910 speakers. All 4 of the woofers were blown. I found a guy that used to work for ads, and who bought a bunch of parts when he left ads before it was bought out. I hesitantly have sent him all the drivers and crossovers from my 910's to check for functioning and to repair as needed.

I was quoted a price locally of $120 per woofer to recone. This guy is going to charge $300 to rebuild ALL 8 drivers using genuine ADS parts. He is checking the crossovers first, because the woofers have been reconed before, but were blown again.

Could a bad crossover be causing these drivers to blow?

Does anyone know what changes were made to the crossovers from the 910's to the 910 II's? Perhaps, there was a design flaw with the original 910 crossovers?

Also, he states one midrange and one trweeter is blown, but I think I'm just going to have him repair all of the drivers. Should I expect to have like new performance with these when they are done, or has some unrepairable damage occured to the drivers that no amount of repair can fix?
Also, if anyone knows a source for the swivel stands for this model, please let me know. Thanks again, and I'll be sure to post pics when my drivers are returned. Also, if everything works out with the repair, I will give this guy's contact info for others needing ads repair work. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Thanks ... Randy

at less than $50 per driver, it sounds like a good deal to me. considering his background, and the parts being used, its an even better deal. once he goes through them they should be as good as new. as for the crossovers, i would go with what he says. cant help with the stands, the best option i know of is to make your own.

NO. His name is Richard So.

Thanks Dingus. Might have to have a shootout 910 vs. 810. I'm in Port Orchard. Found these 910's at the goodwill in Gig Harbor. $17 each.

never heard the 910's so i'd love to check them out. Jupiter810 has a pair of Braun 810's and his 910's are simply a step up. i would like to put them side by side anyway to get a good comparison but it wont be a shootout by any stretch.

after all is said and done, $400 or so for a pair of essentially new 910's is a very good deal.

Just joking about the shootout....I just like hearing different speakers. Lets not count it as all said and done, until I am listening to those bad boys. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I have the L400's. They're small with big sound made of solid 'nut and r truly the cleasnest sounding and best small bookshelves I think I will ever hear. Spaced right and crossed with some low-end--you'll think you were hearing a nice set of full sized cones.

I have an opportunity to purchase some L1290 series 2 ADS speakers. Seems from all of the comments above, that these speaks would have been manufactured when ADS was still producing good quality, true?

Any comments on the depth of bass in these units, and the power required to drive them? Any issues with foam surround rot on these models?

Thanks

They are indeed high quality manufacture. A decent solid state amp is required but they are not a brutal load. The surrounds are butyl rubber & can split over time but that is pretty rare.

I also have the L1230's (just purchased a few days ago) and will attest that they are L810's with better range and leave nothing to be desired. ADS'ER FOR LIFE !

Thanks guys!

I have a Marantz 2325 - 125wpc. Enough oomph for the 1290's? Also, what about the impedance; I believe the 1290s are 4 ohms, might be too tough for the Marantz to drive?

Buyer is asking $550 Cdn, but speakers are mint. I heard that these 1290's might have sold for around $1500 in the late '80s, so if truly mint, seems like an good deal.

Hey BSU! I've yet to hear a set of those but just from looking at the pic it would seem there's an imbalance of boom/tweet. I know the older generation L series had the same prob with the L1530 for the same reason--big woofers and only one high-midrange and one tweet. The next down (like mine) had smaller woofs and balanced very well and the model above it (the L2030) had a whole array of mids and tweets. This leads me to think that the L1500 series were specifically designed for studio work whereby muliple speakers are custom crossed and channeled to represent individual instruments for imagery purposes during sampling/recording.

Update: The L1530 is indeed the best sounding ADS box when bi-amped.

Those have a pair of 9" woofs (they say) and in my experience with one 10" in the
L880 I think those speakers could be killer and may be one of the best of the ADS
lines. This is just my thinking and by the looks of these speakers compared to others.

Soundmotor should be able to tell us! I like the tall cabinets and being a skinny baffle
plus being basically a mirror imaged pair they may have better imaging then others to.

I would investigate prior to bidding on those monsters! I think you would be better served by any of the older series (except the L1530's).

Prefaced with a big FWIW,

I have to respectfully disagree, the L1530 was a fantastic speaker capable of great dynamics and used by a few recording studios as their main monitors. The L2030 was a dog, line array & all. Really, they truly sucked. The L1230 was my favorite of the bunch. It did everything good except play real loud. If you wanted that, the L1530 would, in spades. When we were listening to the L2030's I am sure we blew a woofer on "Money For Nothing" & then they went to the dumpster.

Myself & another built the last set of L1530's ever to be made in the ADS factory, years after the last set was sold to a dealer, as a lark, spring 1993, from forgotten spare parts still in inventory, before they went to the dumpster. I should have kept them as they would have been free. I've heard all the "30" series towers but not against each other. Only one at a time, my opinions are based on that, again, all FWIW.

Of the early "90" series towers, I have also listened to them all & even A/B'd them. IMO, the L1090 was the best of the lot if you used a subwoofer, the L1290 the best all-rounder sans subwoofer, & the L1590 the rep as the best rock & roller. I liked them all & guess if I could only choose one, it would likely be the L1590's. Kind of like a Cadillac with horns, Anna Nicole Smith, or an MC275.

There, I said it.

Catharthis.

I kinda assumed that Soundmotor by the design of these things and having read what
you have said in the past of some of the larger ADS using to many mids/tweets that
these having a single mid/tweet would blend better!
