I have a Marantz 6100 table. It has always functioned very well. However, now when moving the tonearm to and from the rest a loud pop is heard through my speakers. Any ideas?

A tonearm wire with frayed insulation shorting when the tonearm is moved?

G'day all, years ago I had a very similar issue with my old Akai AP-002 turntable.

In my case the 'pop' was more like a 'BANG'! The problem was caused by a very dried out capacitor on the motor circuit board. Regards, Felix aka catman.

Already ruled out the first two?

Dirty switch. Moving the tonearm actuates a switch which powers up the turntable. If it became dirty or oxidized you could get that pop.

Second the capacitor. Usually across the switch to suppress noise when the motor turns on. Does the pop correspond with the platter starting to move?. Any pops when it shuts off? Is it always one loud pop?

Agreed. Even though I've offered two different suggestions, I think Felix got it right...... again.
