ADS Driver roll call

Sure... up to serial 4342, it's a 206-0313. After that, 206-0329. Both are unique to the L910, not used elsewhere. And, they don't show one as having superseded the other as is often the case with early/late ADS drivers. Not sure what's different between the two, but Richard So probably knows.

John

I also have a pair of L630's and haven't found them on the "database site". I am wondering if they had any unique drivers or are simply a 730 in a vinyl [rather than wood veneer] cabinet. Mine are working well and I like them enough that I would want to rebuild as original as possible if anything "gave up the ghost".

Also have a pair of the early 400s [not L] and feel the same about them.

Mike

Edit:: I guess I didn't click enough links… the "1992 parts list" lists the numbers part numbers I was looking for: Is the 206-0328 woof probably an unobtainium ??

John thanks for the info, i think i may have to turn it over to Richards capable hands.

mine are serial numbers 1352 and 1347, 5 apart so id not expect to much variation in drivers, (see pictures) the bottom speaker has simiar drivers and upon removing the screws i realized i am 99.9% sure they have never ever been cracked open, the top speaker has all the questions

the driver closest to the midrange is a 206-3029 but the compartment is not sealed so that is one thing to sort out ..

the bottom driver is the mystery (see other pictures) it doesn't have an ADS sticker on the basket any place but does appear to be an ads/braun driver, it has a flat baffle (like the other speaker but unlike the basket on the 3029) and is stamped 8 ohm, but the hand writing that is to hard to read has the markings explaining the color of positive wires and negative properly.

Wouldn't think so, they were used in the early L620 also so reasonable production volumes. Bound to see someone part out a trashed cabinet sooner or later.

You can always ask Richard about rebuilding the originals to the correct spec though; had him do that for the woofers that came in my L400 (which didn't match) and it was well worth it.

I too have had richard so rebuild drivers not just midranges and tweeters of which has done 6 or 8 for me he also did 2 recones on woofers and as it was said before the result was well worth the time and money. My brother dropped the drivers off in phoenix first time on his way thru town and Mr so took time to take them apart show him what was wrong and rebuild them some of them right in front of him. my brother who is very picky and rants over slovenly anything kindly pointed out this is a man who takes great pride in his work

Thanks for the info Jdurban and Nick… I will keep Richard in mind and keep an eye out on the "you know" sites.
I'm one of the odd men out re SAS… I have three systems in the house and am not the least bit interested in looking for "new" speakers for any of them.
My main Tube system drives SpeakerLab 6s [TT/CD/Tape/Tuner]
The L630s are on my upstairs SS system that is connected to the computer as well as a receiver and turntable.
And the 400s are down in the woodshop where I build and restore stringed instruments… so good sounds are a must for inspiration. [CD/Tape]

Good thing that I'm happy with all three….. money better spent on music to play on them…. and then there's always tools and wood to buy.

There has been an excellent ADS roll call that could use additional information. So since that is a long thread, I'll ask here to have the list checked by anyone that wants to and to add the drivers used in the speakers.

Here is the post with the updated speaker information:
http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?postid=773068#poststop

Here is the thread that post is in:
http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=69719
Please add to this linked thread if you have ads speakers that are not listed or different/additional information about any that are.

This thread is to determine the drivers used in the speakers and whether they are original or replacements. So I will start with the information I have determined about my two pair of ads speakers:

The 810 (no L) in my model designation has push-in wire connectors are 4 ohm and contain:
206-0117 Tweeters (replacements)
206-0211 and 206-0212 Midrange (replacements)
206-0317 Woofers (originals)

The L990 is an 8 ohm speaker with 5-way connection on the bottom and contain:
206-0117 tweets (original)
206-0217 mids (original)
2-10" woofers numbers to be determined. These have double stick gaskets and they are hard to remove without damaging the wood so it may be a while until I add this information.

Note that Soundmotor does an excellent job of discussing the drivers on this thread: http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=44406

If you can post which speakers you have and the drivers they contain and if they are original drivers or tagged as replacements, maybe we can get a better idea of all the speakers ads produced during their heyday.

Thanks in advance for any information. Now to find someone to make a speradsheet to post.

Not a speadsheet but a list of what we have so far (down through post 14). I still need to look at the woofer in the L990s and Paul owes us the numbers in his speakers. Anyone else want to add to this?

Looks like a possible error in the parts list for the 910's.
I just pulled my mids and tweeters to send to Richard for rebuilding.
My serial numbers are 02551 & 02552. The tweeter part number is 206-0107. According to the parts list, this was used at serial number 3210 and up. As far as I know, mine are all original. I had a difficult time pulling the drivers, clearly not a replacement driver.
The mid is PN 206 0201 same as the parts list.

The mid does not have a chamber on it. .

Except when they do -

Any idea if a 206-201 midrange from a L1090 will work for a 206-2011 mid on a L1290? The 206-201 measure around 6 ohms where the 206-2011 on my L1290s measure around 7 ohms. Guessing this will not work. Thanks

Hey Nick,

I looked at pics of 910's online, and it looks like some of your woofers may not not original to the 910? The two with exposed VC wires don't show up in any pics I found, on any ADS speakers, curious. The woofer with the larger dust cover could be correct, but looks like it was possibly re-glued.The other woofer does look correct. Not trying to open a can of worms here, just an observation.
Please correct me if anything I noted is incorrect. :beerchug:

ADS L-780/2 Schematic.
As I never did find a schematic online, I made one from my recent modification for the next guy in my shoes that would like to have a reference for ordering parts before taking things apart. Figured that this would be a good place to stash it. Hopefully, the AK search engine will be able to locate it.

I thought I'd add my two pairs to the thread:

1/ ADS 810 (No L)

Serial # 13919 & 13956

Tweeter: 206-0107

Midrange: 206-0201

Woofer: 206-0317

Grill: 322-0014 (Cloth)

DCR: 3.2 Ohms

2/ ADS L500

Serial Number: 11997 & 12811

Tweeter: 206-0100

Woofer: 206-0316

DCR: 3.5 Ohms

According to the 1992 ADS Parts Schedule, L810's used the 206-0107 tweeter beginning with serial number 13918. If this is accurate, then my #13919 would be the second 810 speaker to have been equipped with a 206-0107 tweeter.

ADS L-780 Crossover

Thank you, I just got a pair with both 0355 woofers scratchy coil syndrome. Wondering if it was sag or not, or maybe noise from the cross overs. Need to be recapped for a first step, and then either re/coil-cone or just replacements with NOS or used parts. Anyone have suggestions, and parts cheap?

If you have the /2's, the original caps in the band-pass part of the crossover are low-leakage electrolytics. I'm not sure how critical that is, but they're a little harder to find in axial. I wound up preferring poly-caps and used those, which are quite common. An original 10% tolerance radial cap for the low pass (woofer) is also hard to find - 20% tolerance for radial caps seem to be the norm. I used an axial, but I reconfigured the PC board to accommodate the larger poly caps and the axial woofer electrolytic cap.
The box radial cap for the tweeter is film and probably still in good shape.
I read somewhere that the fuse for the tweeter in the 780's (no /2) is 1.6 amps. As I couldn't cross-reference the numbers on the stock polyswitch (self resetting circuit breaker) pictured in my crossover, I went conservative and used a .65 amp one. I haven't popped either of them yet, but I don't drive the speakers beyond a listenable volume.

Turns out to be a blow couple of 0355's, but to make sure these were not fried due to a bad crossover, I'm going to do your version of the crossovers.
Very cool, and thanks!
By chance did you make a PDF/etch document for the PCB, or did you just wing it with a small drill bit, tape measure, hot glue, and some small gauge wire, solder and an iron?

Coil rubs on that woofer are usually from a bent voice-coil former. They used aluminum and when driven really hard they hit the magnet/pole assembly and bend.

Hello. I recently acquired a pair of L1290's and one of the mid drivers has a little distortion. Although I only hear it with about 25% of the music I listen to (classical and jazz), I should address it. As I haven't found the exact replacement (206-0211) yet on eBay, can I replace it with another model? Or perhaps I should just pack up both pairs of mids and tweeters and send them to Richard So for refurbishing?

Also (although this might not be the best post for this question) what exactly are the sonic differences between the L1290 series 1 and series 2? If I had the opportunity to get a pair of L1590's, should I do that (my current listening room is 12' x 15' positioned widthwise)? I know the L1590's have a little bit more bass from the larger woofers but would it be overpowering in my room (and I have heard that the narrower cabinet of the L1290's makes a more focused sound field)? And I am using a Mirage 15" down-firing sub as well. And lastly I should mention that the tweeters and mid-range drivers on the L1590's were replaced with non ADS drivers (Vifa or Hi-Vi).
