ADS models, an impromptu rollcall

So what's the deal with models that don't have an L in the front of the number like my 710's? My L810's have L810 on the back unlike my 710's. I guess they forget the L or are they a different model? I purchased these from the original owner and he said he purchased them in 1975. They are a three way design with a 1" tweet, 2" mid, and two 7" drivers.

I'm sure Soundmotor has the VOTT on that but I also have a non 'L' set--the 700--and I seem to recall somewhere that they are the predecessors to the 'L's in the early days of the Braun union (I recall reading some link about the screw type speaker binding posts).

Anyway . . can't wait for some clarity on it too.

soundmotor, I just picked up a pair of these and I'm having the mids and tweeters re-worked as I write this.

From what I can tell, the tweeter pairs (one mounted upright and one mounted horizontally) are an 'either that pair or this pair' operated from a toggle switch on the front panel that says "imaging" with arrows pointing either horizontal or vertical. I assumed the choice of which tweeter pair operated was to allow the owner to select between tweeters when the cabinets were set on their side or upright. Can you confirm any of this? This model seems pretty rare. I can’t wait to get them back together to see how they compare to my L810s series IIs.

Either/Or, Horizontal/Vertical is correct. They were meant for control room use & to allow the engineer to tailor them to the space. They are rare but always thought the idea was somewhat lame. A square plate with the tweeter & mid that you could orient 90-degrees either way would have done the same thing & let you mirror-image as well. On the other hand, you have a spare set of back-up tweeters included with them. They were before my time but I don't believe they made more than a few hundred of them. They'll sound just fine.

Ads?

Saw these on the NY Craigslist today (see posting in Dollars & Sense). Some of these appear to be upper end ADS speakers.

2 sets of L1590's & a single L980 shown.

You can tell that the L1590's spent their life with their grilles on. See the fade line below the bottom woofer? The one set is quite rare as they are in rosewood veneer.

Soundmotor you are on it – this dual tweeter jazz seems like a gimmick. I really only purchased the BC8s to use the two pair of tweets and one pair of mids as replacements should either of my L810s go down. So now I’ll have a pair of functioning BC8s and hold out the extra pair of tweets to boot. Richard So is getting all the mids and tweets up to scratch and I’ll reinstall the drivers in the BC8s to use in a small office room for the time being.

One more thing if you have time. I noted that when BC8 ‘image’ toggle which is in the vertical image position (for when the speakers are floorstanding), the tweets that are hot are actually mounted horizontally. This confuses me as my L810s, which use the exact same mids and tweets, has the tweeters mounted vertically. The reason I’d like to figure this out is because I will only re-install one pair of the tweets so I want to get it right for floorstanding use. Seems like someone thought the tweeters have a natural mounting position for imaging, and as mounted in the BC8 and the L810s, the engineers did not agree on what is was…

The L980s sure look like they are Michael Kelly designs if judged only from the style of some of the Aerial models....

Could anyone match Kelly to the models in the list?

What about the HT400LCRs? There were the extruded aluminum cased home theater jobs that nobody seems to care about. I heard them and I thought the soundstage was really generous and full, but the mid-bass on down was no place to be found.

My old stereo dealer in Greenfield, MA had a set of the L2030s in his shop...boy oh boy were those nice speakers that I could NEVER afford...he had them hooked-up always to the latest and best Yamaha amps...did they ever sound nice, I recall.

Kegger, go back and look- it's there! Right between the L810 and L910. It was just missing the pertinent info regarding driver size, ohm rating, ect...

My choice of an ADS speaker was to initially look for an L880- a little easier to drive than an 810 I was told, and much more of a match for my humble amps.

I just happened across a pair of L630 three-ways for a great price- the only thing keeping me from still actively persuing the 880s.

I can't believe you have 8 of them!

Plese keep me on the short list if you ever slim down any more, will ya?

I was just messin with yu as Pete mentioned you hadn't had them on there yet! :D

Will put yu on the short list if I do move any more. My Good buddy Suidward knocked
me down to 6 of them today. ,:tears:, But he is 1 of 2 that got me on this ADS kick in the
first and he did need to get back on the wagon with a bigger pair then he had, Hope he
enjoys them as much as I do. :music:  :music:  :music:

Thanks, Kegger.

This month is turning out to be a pretty stellar one gear-wise for me. So I can't complain.

But if you get the itch, I so much rather buy from an AKer than an eBayer.

I look forward to running my L570s with my L630s. It's stuff like this I live for nowadays.

The joy and deep satisfaction of hearing beautiful, well-crafted heartfelt music through equipment that's well-designed by people with their heart in their ears just seems to bring it all together.

My speakers of choice so far are my delightful ADS and BA brands.

I hope I'm able to get my ADS Acoustic Demension Synthesizer in working condition soon. Running ADS speakers with this is going to be one hell of a treat for sure.

Kegger, what other speakers do you own? I think I appreciate your ear.

And how the hell did you end up with 4 pair of L880s by the way, anyhow?

Giggity!

I did not read everything in this thread, (just back after a few days away) but the last list, which should be the FIRST LIST, updated with new info so it can be more easily viewed, is still lacking my 810 model. Do they get on the list even though they don't have an L in the model number.
Tweet, mid and a pair of woofers and I can put in the numbers, but some are replacement driver.

give me the info on yours, and I'll post it. Driver size, driver count, ohm rating, ect.

As for the last list being the first, I could edit it, but then am I going to get folks to look and make corrections?

The first list was to start the ball rolling. With help from the excellent members here, you've seen it's grown quite well.

The L980 is that squarish box with the black grill. The other towers with the round tweeters aren't ADS. No idea what they are...I'd love those rosewood 1590's...

Oh yes, I see that now. I wonder if those are Aerials of some kind?

Also, with lots of work, effort and help on Duffinator's part, I think I'll be able to add more info to the list real soon... :thmbsp:

I don't know what the prevailing philosophy was or even if there was one.

I would simply use the setting that sounds the best in the orientation you are using them.

The L520 is 8 ohms
