ADS models, an impromptu rollcall

I think some further investigation might be due, fuses the likely culprit if Series 1 versions. Bass response is going to be room dependent too. You might just have them positioned in a node where one frequency is getting way too much emphasis. Good stands wouldn't hurt either.
 
The 206-0219 midrange family -

All the above used the 206-0122 tweeter and essentially the same driver layout; CM7, SAT7, 750il a 7" woofer, and L9e, M9, M9/90 using an 8" woofer. Only the L9e used the "Stifflite" cone (paper). Of the above, the CM7 & L9e probably had the greatest sales numbers. The lowest volume being the M9/90, maybe not more than a couple hundred pairs, if that. There are German-made (w/ Braun logo) versions of the CM7, M9, & M9/90 and they sound different from the US models as well as use identical looking but German-made drivers. Early in production the CM line used Braun made drivers until the US-made ones were available.

I would like to find some of those L9e with the Stifflite cones.... in your opinion was the newer poly woofer better sounding than the stifflite? I am using the L-880's with the S-10 woofers that you sold me, and they are amazing!! The original stifflite woofers sounded good too, but I had to be real easy on the volume.

The plastic (errr, copolymer in a/d/s/-speak) cones sound different. When the company changed over, a lot of dealers did not like them. Like anything there is a learning curve and ultimately the later cones reached parity. "Super L880" is probably the best way to describe yours as now configured. That was a common upgrade by employees that had original versions.

First post, at least on this forum.

I had a bit of luck this week - I was talking to a co-worker about his PSB and Polk speakers and mentioned that I liked my ADS that are in my garage rig. He said heck I have a pair of ADS that I really like but I don't use. Do you want them? I said gee, I really don't need any more speakers, but would love to A/B them with my 520s. He brought them in the next day and as it turns out, they are L9e's. They sound great!

I decided what the heck, I will buy them and ask the wife's forgiveness later. After my rave review of the speakers, he just gave them to me! I'll be inserting them into my office rig at work so I can enjoy them everyday.

Has anyone compared the 620's to either the 520's or the L9e's? I have never heard 620s. but I have the woofers and tweeters to build a set, and just need some cross-overs.

BTW, I picked up the 520's for $10 at a consignment store a few months back.
 
While I've never heard a pair the L9e's are highly regarded and I suspect sound quite a bit better than the L520/620's. Great score and don't forget to post some pictures.
 
I'm glad someone listed the L880 model which my father received as a present a long time ago by an audiophile friend of his. Supposedly the bass response was supposed to be exceptional at the time (late 80's or early 90's). They're really nice looking speakers as well.
 
Does anyone know if the Braun CM series speaker shown here is the CM7, or was this a larger model available only in Germany?

L780 was basically a more affordable L710. The midrange and tweeter are very similar if not identical. The lower price was due to it having a single woofer unlike the high-end models which had dual woofers. That price seems reasonable for a pair in good condition.

I would say the M9 is similar....I fortunately have my hands on both pairs but have not yet A/B them. The larger woofer in the 880 does produce "lower" frequencies. The M9 is the only pair i have with the "nonsticky" mids and tweeters....The M9's Amaze me at time, even listening to them through my cheap Yamaha HTR 5440

I have them, my own.... first A/D/S start of the craze ...high quality speaker...The small cabinet i believe limits some of the lower end...but still overall excellent....I currently run 2 pair stacked as my "main" listening setup and have pretty good results
 
I've used a/d/s L-980's since I bought them new in 1984. As much as I've tried, I can't find a reason to replace them.
 
Blanketed L880's ??

Just read the follow-up posts regarding where I said my 880's sound like they have a blanket over them. Okay, a bit of an exaggeration. Just compared to the openness of the M15 mid & highs and the difference in bass (2 drivers vs 1 and about double the cabinet size) the 880's just can't compare. I'm not suggesting they should either because if memory serves the M15's also cost about 3 times as much!

And to be fair I've owned several other speakers including some Yamahas which retailed for something like $900. The L880's just plain eat them up. The Yamahas are in the garage because they get so loud I use them to peel the paint off old cars! Makes your head rattle in about 30 minutes too! :-)

Anyway, thought I would clarify that.

ADS owners...I have a chance to aquire some mint condition L420's....if I tend to like EPI/BA/GENESIS....would I appreciate these speakers?

I have a pair of the last version of L420's, the ones with the bronze metal grills, and I really like them. I listen to them almost daily in my garage/shop. I have not listened to any of the other speakers you mentioned. They typically go for $100 or less.
 
Anyone know where I can see a few pics of the c2000 crossover? I hear so much about it that I need to see it for myself.....maybe its just a myth?? Sorry if this is the wrong thread!
