Air Guns

Had some time to sling some lead down range today. Breezy so wind doping going on. 80 yards. Beeman R10 Hunnington Beach in .177 with a period Beeman SS2 3x scope. Shooting at a 6" clapper style firebell turned on it's side - about as big as a small ground squirrel sitting up - 2" x 6". Only hit about 50% but still fun.20210321_161026.jpg

My Beeman R-1 Magnum is a nice Springer, but I think it's seen better days as far as accuracy, and shooting right and needs a good tune done right. I wouldn't know who to trust today to do the job right, and not alter the Rifle with a bunch of stupid oddball parts. It's gotten very loud, not much quieter than a .22, and hammers pretty hard when firing.

Basically, I think I'd just want all internals cleaned, polished if necessary, and a new Piston Seal, that's it. No Vortex this or that.

If I had the mad money, yep, I'd like going PCP, this one right here, why mess around?!. I could see this getting pretty expensive with a possible needed compressor, all the bells and whistles, scopes, mounts, etc, not sure if the cheapo chinese compressors are any good or will last?

I like .177, but might be open to try other Calibers. I think with this Daystate, ,22, or even .25 would be quite authoritive, accurate, and pretty quiet. Nice little Rat Plinker, dont you think?! LOL

Sounds like your piston seal is shot for sure and you have some piston slam there. Don't use it until its repaired. James Macarri still makes springs and offers seals for it. Select a tuner that uses his parts. Barrel may need cleaning if it's never been done. Use patches on a pull through cord. You can make one from weed trimmer line. Cut one end to a point and melt the other end a bit to hold the patch on. Use a good bore cleaner followed by CLP or similar. No wire brushes!!

As for tuners, there are a few around. Paul Watts is still around probably pricey? Ed Krzynowek "Ekmeister" is mentioned a lot on airgun forums as doing great work. He's in Texas.

Ive heard very good things about the Diana Stormrider PCP. Order the regulator and extra barrel band. It can be filled with a hand pump although Chinese high pressure compressors have come down in cost. For the money they are supposed to be hard to beat. 22 cal would be the one to get.

Airgun range.
Sitting on my deck to the targets = 80 yards. If you zoom on my pic you will see them in the corner where the woods meets the corner of the fence. Large bell facing head-on is a 10" school bell from my old grade school ( don't ask). Gets fresh paint applied periodically. It will resonate with a "thunk" if its hit on center in the black or a "clank" if its hit off center. To the right is a 6" fire alarm clapper style bell turned on its side. 2" wide and 6" tall. Lets out a nice, high pitched "ping" when its hit. It's not micro surgery precision at this distance with a pellet gun but its still fun all the same. I'll get a pic with better res up so you can see the bells better.

So, I'm convinced that I won my battle against the ground squirrels; nothing for most of a year.
Then, yesterday, Sarge pointed out a Rattus Rattus,... a real rat that was hanging out around her bird feeding station.
We no longer have that issue either.
Crosman 2285 Bug-Out for the clean kill

The HOSPs (house sparrow) have been trying to take up residence in one of my bluebird boxes. I'm doing my best to keep them out of the area. Pesky, nasty invasive things.

Sparrows were brought to this country by an Englishman who missed home. He thought bringing sparrows to this country would help his loneliness. In the meantime this country is overrun by the little buggers. We had them at the house that we lived in when I was a kid. Our house had shutters in every window on the front of the house and a nest of sparrows occupied every shutter. My Father told me he would pay me a quarter for every one I could shoot with my BB gun. I never made much on that deal. You don't realize how small they really are until you try to shoot one. Starlings were worth fifty cents and were a whole lot bigger to shoot.

Question for all you air gun peps. What’s a good $200USD varmint gun? I had a Ruger (Umarex) something about 10yrs ago in .17 cal, did everything I needed, just wondering if there is something better in that price range. And yes I realize this will be as subjective as an audio cable question, just wanting ideas of what to look at.

Thanks

I bought a Ruger Impact Max .22 back in
September. and I am still very happy with it.
I bought it for varmint control.
lots of review videos on youtube.

Used Diana 34 or a new one isn't much more. Still a true to life, German spring piston gun. Get some good pellets for it - JSB or H&K. Springer rated scope and you're good. Hawke, Leapers, Simmons. Has to be able to handle the dual recoil.

Zero affiliation. I'd offer $200 and see where it goes.

I started with a Crosman 1377, but now have "graduated" to a Weihrauch HW75 which I use for 10m target practice. During Covid - 19 times it is very convenient to pop out of the home office and have fun while on break. If that was a firearm, my salary wouldn't be enough to support the habit...

I wouldn't diss the airsoft guns as all of mine have adjustable sights and are a convenient method to shoot when the weather is bad. I have a sticky target on my wall that captures the bb's.

I don't shoot at any animals, but the annoying bumble bees that always like to check you out. I especially hate when they stop and stare at you while suspended in the air. That's when the airsoft guns really come to play, because when hit with the plastic bb, the bumble bees explode like fireworks. Another advantage is that one can do that anywhere on the porch or around the house without damaging it.

You know they are animals, right? They are also pollinators.

Shoot at the feral cats instead.
