AK Design Collaborative - Insignia-Class Economy Speakers (a.k.a Indignia)

Are those internal dimensions? The first concern I would have would be fitting the port with those dims.

You can also just fill the enclosure with .17 cu ft of material to get the right size.

BB6P says it'll actually play better bass in that box. With the 1.5" port 6" long, tuning is 35 Hz.

F6 = 34 Hz delicious.... :thmbsp:
 
14-1/2" H x 8-1/2" W x 9-3/4" D = external Dimentions
I Just subtracted .75 from each side to get the size .. and as I'm typing this realize that I screwed up . I should have subtracted 1.5 from each #.
The Volume would be more like.43 cubic feet.
I thought that I'd try to use the existing ports.
Would the dual ports screw everything up?

No. You can try different bass tunings by closing one or both ports, or extending them inside with elbows.

What are the ID and length of the ports? The sim is still open here.... :yes:

If it makes you feel any better, mine are .477 minus ample amounts of bracing, and they sound pretty tasty. In fact, I was just listening to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" and was hearing things I'd never heard before. I'm very pleased, and I suspect you probably will be, too.

EDIT: Okay, never mind. I got interested, and ran a few quick calculations. I did these before I built, but they still surprised me. It turns out with my bracing, and crossover board I end up right around .37, so a little on the small side. Hopefully the fiberglass makes up for it.

I believe it was Ray who first observed that the Indignia woofer would play lower in a larger box (~0.5 cuft). It will, even tuned to the same frequency, but it loses a bit of power handling capacity (orchid).

I think we made a good compromise in keeping the box size small. They're certainly not lacking for bass response (cyan).... :thmbsp:

Comrade Boris Those Boxes look great!

Well when I measured the actual speakers I get- 12.5Hx7.25Wx8.5D. -1.5 all around = .25 cubic feet +/- No Good.

Searched around the barn for a while and came up with a couple of possible candidates.

Does the cabinet shape mater as much as the volume?

Option 1: A pair of realistic Nova 4's. 19h x 11w x 7d = .52 +/- so i could put more bracing / padding in them.

Option2: Zenith Alegro 1000's I think. 16.5h x 10.5w x 7.5d = .468

Option 3: Dig around the barn and build my own boxes.

Option 4: Bite the bullet and just buy the damn boxes.

Has anyone that has heard these compaired them to something like KEF 103.2
or Polk RT7's?

Shape won't be a big issue but you may get a slightly different response due to different refraction off the baffle if it's shaped differently. I'm about to embark on a non-rectangular Indignia. I'll see what happens with that.

Response curves are a hard sell. I endeavor to engage a wide spectrum of readers.

[AND Miss Orchid giggles giddily whenever I post "her" colour.... ;) ]

By my calcs, those'll fit into a 7-3/16" x 13-3/16" cutout, and Dave says he's going to stock milled versions of those ready for driver and port mounting.

I don't know what Dave's price would be for these options, but they might comprise an alternative approach to the most difficult part of building Indignias.... :yes:

I was more-or-less taking a look at my Focal speakers which are about the same size, maybe a little bigger, but they have inverted domes & a little aluminum waveguide surrounding the tweeter. Perhaps the designers had cabinet diffraction in mind... I'll post pics later today.

Is this what the little aluminum deal you had, or was it the axiom version? May not have spelled "axiom" correctly, but when Focal was big in DIY drivers, they had an extremely high end range of drivers called this, and the tweeter from that series also had a little wave guide as I remember.

OK, I've finished this entire thread. Waiting for the group buy thing, looks like the first round is ready, so it shouldnt be long. I've got some .5 cu ft boxes, and can eat that down to .38 or where ever with a syrofoam block, and retune.
Later I can buy the pretty PE ones and fix it proper.:yes: These are at hand, and I'm a gonna try them first. (might also try to stuff one of those smaller wave guides from JBL in there with the now existing woofer once proper indignia box is procured.)
