AK Design Collaborative - Insignia-Class Economy Speakers (a.k.a Indignia)

Bet they sound a little bass heavy, huh? ;)

They may well need some breakin, everyone talks about being impressed with the bass, Im not getting a whole lot, but the 4507/2235H behind them shakes the house, not a fair comparison at all. Did everyone else's need breakin or should I start looking for a mis wire?

Ray's comment regarding the bass observed that you didn't have tweeters in them at the time. :tongue:

You are listening to them in freespace, without boundary reinforcement, which is how I play mine all of the time. The bass is very well-balanced, but it should be obvious from their size that these are not "Rock the house" speakers like your E'Waves behind them unless augmented with a subwoofer.

You can check the internal wiring for woofer polarity with the battery test on the input terminals. I'd suspect that if they were wrong, you'd be hearing no bass at all the way you have them set up.... :dunno:

I think they are just fine, they are sounding better and better, plus I just had to make a scale adjustment there. The port will blow out a bick lighter at about 12 inches! About the last adjustment I think I need to make is to possibly drill a little relief into the back lower edges of the grill, as there is interference with a couple of the woofer mounting screws. I used Black flat pan head type wood screws from PE.

For the price, these things kick ass so far, that's apparent. As to subs, when I aquire the CX 3400 I think I'll try popping them on top of the 4507/2235H, two or three holes plugged.....that should do it.:thmbsp:

Zilch do you mean to test polarity on the inputs of the driver itself, ( how I understood it was done) or that I can perform this test directly on the speaker wire connecting posts on the back of the box?

How would those in the know compare the Indignia's bass to say the bass of the large Advent so many are E'waving with? I realize the Advent has a woofer size advantage, but just as a gauge.:scratch2:

On the back of the cabinet, to verify that the woofer leads haven't been inadvertently inverted on one. Sounds like you don't have an issue now, though. :dunno:

Indignias do not reach as low as large Advents, which are optimized for extended bass.

As you're hearing, Indignias are clearly "overachievers" in comparison to equivalent-size speakers in this respect, however. :thmbsp:

Congrats, RussellC and welcome to the Indignia club.

I spent Saturday helping a friend build a pair. Those PE cabinets are very nice.

BTW, my friend will be in touch soon Zilch.
 
Yes, the little speakers are breaking in nicely. Woofs a little stiff at first, making bass, but no warmth to it, mids a little dry, tweets a little, well, resolution a little fuzzy. A couple of days work out cleared all this up. Warmth in the bass, mids clearing up as is the tweeter. Begining to sound way better than what one would think such a small investment would yield.
Begining to sound sweet with trebling revealing much more than upon first fire up. Another collaberative winner for sure!

What about an Indignia center channel, using the same tweeter but with two 6" woofs in a thin horizontal cab and the tweeter in the middle?

Horizontal MTM sucks for center channel; you've got to put a MT stack in the middle for it to work worth a whit.

Go to the library and look at Fig. 18.18, P. 400, in Toole's new book, Sound Reproduction.

Use a single indignia on its side for center.... :yes:

Anyone else have an interference problem between the woofer mounting screws and the edge of the grill? I'm using PE flat (pan) head screws, but on the lower half of the grill, they hit the edge and hold the grill out about 1/4 of an inch or so away from the magnets. Im thinking of cutting holes in the edge to clear. I'll post a pic of the problem when I get home. Maybe if I move the locations of the screws I can get more clearance.

I've posted it twice, now, Russell -- use flat head screws in those two positions. Pan heads are not flat heads. Flat heads go in flush. Think sheetrock screws.

I s'pose it'd be possible to cut the woofer recess deeper, but anything substantial will leave a diffraction edge there; the smoother the transition, the better.

I guess I dont know what a flat head screw is. I thought it was what I call a pan head. short of dimpling the metal where the mounting screw goes through, I dont see how it would get "flush". I used PE 081-440 and 081-425
for mounting the woofer and tweeter, the slightlt smaller diameter ones for the tweeter, the larger for the woofers. They are listed as "speaker mounting screws" in the catalog....below them are "coarse thread cabinet screws" which are flat across the top, but cone shaped underneath, which would dimple the stamped frame of the woofer if screwed down until flat. Perhaps I havent seen a flat head? Googling flat head screws shows construction like the above mentioned coarse thread cabinet screws. Do you just torque them down dimple or no? Sorry to be thick about this, and yes Zilch I see you've posted twice, how about a photo? I'll post mine as soon as I get home. Otherwise, I'll cut a little relief in the frame.:headscrat
