AK Design Collaborative - Insignia-Class Economy Speakers (a.k.a Indignia)

hi all - brand new member - signed up because I saw the coverage on PE e-mail - very cool project!

Anyway - regarding the bent snorkal - note that you CAN bend pvc.

Working on some components for MRI machines years ago, I learned you could soak PVC (I think it was just white Sch 40 stuff, but maybe it was the cold water version) in boiling water for a few minutes - then bent to shape - being careful to not allow it to collapse.

When happy, soak in an ice bath, until it re-firms. Result was a smooth, clean curve in PVC.
 
I'd be concerned about the size of the ID collapsing or changing to some degree during the process the way a crush bent exhaust does compared to mandrel bent exhaust. If the inner cross-sectional area changed in the curved area, you'd have a different tuning frequency.

I've seen it done on a sewer pipe wih a torch, right Jaymana? No need here, they sell all you need "pre bent."

As long as you have some plan for keeping the ID uniform it sounds like a good idea. However, like Russell said, they have all the parts available and they're not very expensive.

As for the real life low end FR, you'll have to talk to Zilch about that. He was head measurement geek on this one. If nothing turns up in the next couple of weeks I'll be tweaking out a design so I'll have the measurement setup set up and I'll do it then. However, I have a week and change out of the country coming up so it'll be 3 weeks or so before I'm back at it.
 
so by stuffing the cabinet with sound dampening material arent we changing the internal volume of the cabinet? If so do we need to be more precise with how much we use?

This is a ported speaker. It has already been said several times here, but it is not the best idea to fill ported speakers full of ANY material like you would a sealed cab speaker. These are best with material on the walls, or at least several surfaces. The "middle" shouldnt be all stuffed full of anything. Yes, it will affect all sorts of stuff, just not positively.

Would the egg crate material that they sell for beds glued to the walls work?
 
I am glad to see the interest in this project continues.

If you want to bend pvc, filling the tube with sand prior to bending helps hold its shape.
 
I bought the PE Curved cabinets and my grill covers don't fit is that normal?

easy fix but just want to check to see if i did something wrong?
 
If you don't recess the drivers in the baffle, you have to relieve the wood frame on the grille. Even if you do recess them, you still have to account for the screw heads.
 
I will file that under Brilliant things that would be nice to know before I milled the baffles. I am sure it was mentioned somewhere in this thread...... oh well
 
Cabinet plans

I'm considering building a set of Indignias but would like to build my cabinet sfrom scratch.

Are any plans or dimensions available for the enclosures.

Part of the fun of the project is that there really isn't a hard set of dimensions or shape. If you want to stick strictly to the design then start with the baffle (8 x 14" IIRC) and go with the depth you need considering the wall thickness you're using. I seem to recall about 10.5" (internal) for 3/4" material.

However, it's not set in stone. The ones that Specialidiot has needed to fit a niche in his office so they're shorter and a tad deeper. The Roundignias (now with OnePixel out west) don't conform to any of the established dimensions.
