AK Design Collaborative - Insubnia

Once the final layout is available, I'm sure there will be lots of solutions from AKers on how they made one. I've already got a few methods in mind... :scratch2:
 
I've got a tapped horn fold done. Using 1/2" material, it is about 2.9 cubic feet externally, which is bigger than I wanted, but I really can't go any smaller, as I have to fit the driver in. This is a 13.5' long tapped horn all folded up into a 2.9 cubic-foot box with no wasted space. There is a lot going on inside there, over 0.75 cubic feet of that box volume is occupied by wood, not air.

I modeled with (and will build and measure with) the Exodus Anarchy, but the Tang Band W6-1139 works surprisingly well in the same cabinet.

My Sketchup skills are improving, but I am no jedi yet. Working on finishing up the dimensioned drawing and a cutlist, then it is time to cut some wood.

Attached is the sketchup file. Change the dimensions to inches if you want....I like laying out stuff in metric, it's easier than english....no fractions....

All panels are on, just have to attach the second side...pics to come as soon as my camera's battery gets charged....should be able to measure hopefully tomorrow or next day...

Last side is on and it is in clamps...just need glue to dry and cut an access panel, mount access panel flanges, and fire this bitch up...

Yeah, it is around 2.5 cu ft....it's the smallest I could make a 30Hz horn based on the TB driver and still get 85dB 1w/1m sensitivity at 30Hz...

It's a little bit bigger than 20"x20"x10"...small compared to my old 30"x30"18" bass horn and 36"x36"x24" current basshorn....but the output that comes out of the big one is unreal...so I think this one is 'cute' it is so small...

This project is also a proof of concept thing, I want to see if my folding patterns are correct, if WYSIWYG for my hornresp inputs and folding technique...

For a better use of the same space with a little more cash, a dual driver vented cabinet would be good for 30Hz...but you need a highpass filter to prevent over-excursion...

I have a completed fold, dimensioned plans, a cut list and some plywood.

Now all I need is some time to make sawdust.
 
OK folks....I just couldn't resist...the damned glue is barely dry, and I just had to throw in the driver....

Here's what hornresp predicts for an open rear chamber (I simmed it with 9999 liters for Vrc)...

So I hook the bitch up, and take a nearfield measurement indoors:

And I think....TOTAL F'ING DISASTER......I am thinking about the air leaks I must have by rushing to test this thing, and kicking myself to and fro.....but I am hearing TONS of bass...what is up?

Supreme IDIOT myself had the meter on 'A' weighting....

This is a resounding success....without the cover, it really unloads and excursion gets out of control below 32Hz, but 32Hz and above gets really damned loud, and clean....105dB at 35Hz from ~1m away with less than 2.5% THD....but this is indoors, so it is really neither here nor there...It also has a +/- 1.5 dB response from 35-70Hz, which should improve when the cover goes on, and be good from 30-70Hz...

I have to get this cover made and get this thing outside to measure...but this thing can belt out a good amount of sound for a 6.5" driver...

Just found this thread :p. Color me interested--my old man has agreed to allowing me to show him why DIY >> commercial when it comes to subs. Problem is, he has a max budget of $300 (preferentially 200), a HUGE room, and wants to keep it small. The subs presented in this thread seem to cover all the bases pretty well. I doubt he'd miss 20-30Hz anyways :D.

Looks nice...how big is that box? My horn was 47 liters in hornresp....and it is 2.5 cuft built with 1/2" MDF....

Also, what are the Le values (coils series/parallel) for that driver? And there are a couple of impedance options, but only one set of specs listed....do you know where we can get accurate specs for that driver?

Got the flanges glued early this AM, but looks like it'll be tomorrow before we get measurements...we'll see...

Creative USB Soundcard, Behringer A500 amplifier...

RoomEQ Wizard software, Galaxy CM-140 SPL meter, and to round things off, an el cheapo WallyWorld voltmeter to measure Volts into the box when the real sweeps are done tomorrow...

OK, as far as resounding success....maybe not yet...but it is very reassuring to have something that you designed and built have a prelim measurement that agrees pretty darned well with the simulations/models...

Got the cover on....and good news and bad news, folks...

Good news:

Insubnia v1.0, TangBand W6-1139SI driver, 30Hz, 47 liter Offset Driver Front Loaded horn, 20.75"x20.75"x10.25".

Check out this plot comparing the hornresp prediction to the buttoned-up Insubnia (upper measured graph is at the horn mouth, lower graph is hornresp prediction, graphs are artificially separated):

They agree very well!! My guess is that the horn folds contribute highly to the differences...and I have a slightly smaller rear chamber than modeled, I forgot to include the volume of the mounting flanges and the driver in my model...

Bad news...hornresp predicts excursion with 2V in to be something like this:

Which means that it should take 15V in without exceeding Xmax anywhere...but problems begin below 30Hz....distortion rises rapidly, and by 20Hz, it can only take 4.5V in before reaching 10% THD....my enclosure is leak tight, I double checked.....my only guess is that while the mic is placed in the nearfield, there is so much air movement that it gives false distortion readings....I'll find out tomorrow early AM outdoors...

Either the mic is too close, or the driver simply cannot do ULF well...we'll know more tomorrow. I do not think the driver is moving past Xmax, but without seeing it, I can't be sure. I did push 20Hz to 100% THD, and no bad sounds (driver hitting Xmech), so I am thinking it just may be that ultra-lows just can't be done by this little guy well....

If anyone has ideas as to what you think is causing the THD problem, please share them...

The other good news....30Hz took over 12.5V before exceeding 10% THD, and 32Hz took 15+ Volts, and I could not hit 10% THD without fearing I would damage the driver (meter was reading in the 120s, but was closer than 1m from mouth).

Basically, from 30Hz on up, this thing ROCKS. Clean, loud. The below 30Hz distortion problem I'll investigate further, but for now, I am pretty satisfied...

It is amazing how much bass this little thing can dish out. With a little EQ and a lowpass, most any music will pose no problems (most music contains very little below 30Hz), for movies and ULF music genres, a highpass may be necessary, pending the distortion investigations...

OH, and thing "C," what is the spec'd Xmax @ 10% THD?
