AK is killing my internet connection more and more often...

I went to XenForo's own web site to have a look. Unfortunately I can't tell for sure, whether their own community forum is already based on XenForo 2. But if so, it would appear to render no problemo on my old notebook under WinXP (SP3) and the last compatible Firefox version for that - and the search function seemed to work, too.

OTOH the latest and "greatest" isn't always the best. In order to avoid the latest bugs I've had to install previous versions of FFmpeg, OpenCV, and MinGW-w64 and I'm sure there are others. That's why they keep the previous versions available.

I'm using the same setup, but I have come across a few websites that throw up a notice to upgrade to a newer version of Firefox to enter. Then I have to use the Fishwife's laptop with Win10.
I don't know anything about Zen1 or 2, but I was wondering if AK might become one of those sites that will tell me I need to upgrade. Especially since AK is having to do just that.

You should be good...just go to https://xenforo.com/community and poke around. See if any errors pop up. I believe their forum is Xen 2.2.12
 
WinXP?? Should we presume your hardware is that old and just can not be updated further?
Thats a security issue YOU should be concerned with - there are a LOT of known hacks for WinXP.
But if you don't do the internet, its probably not an issue.

Honestly, I am NOT trying to be snarky with you, but incompatibility with very old hardware is NOT a bug with Audiokarma - we cannot encourage or help you with gear that so obsolete. If it works here, bravo, but we have to keep the site secure for the majority of user who will be running newer software.

That is much appreciated hjames!

It seems to me the bottom line is AK has almost 339,000 members and if 1/3 of those members don't regularly use AK, that leaves about 227,000 members. 1% of that would be 2,270 members but we don't have anywhere near that many members that are having problems. What we have seems to be maybe 50 members having problems? That means over 99.9% of members are NOT having problems!

Indeed. I'm currently still sitting in front a a 18 2/3 year old Gericom Ego (alias MSI M510A) notebook - that's a 1st generation Centrino platform model, based on the Pentium M 1.5 GHz (Banias family), back then upgraded from the stock 512 MByte to then then possible 1 GByte RAM. Already got the planned successor for that, though - just not done with upgrading the hardware and installing the OS & software environment yet. So the longer AK still works for my stone-age equipment and OS & software, the less I'm in a hurry with that move - lazybag me.

But I also didn't complain about current problems with AK (as I don't have any....), nor have I complained about issues with other web sites -'cause I know, that it's my fault, that in the meantime quite a few web sites won't work with my old IT environment anymore (be that properly and/or completely or at all). I used to be an IT journalist - I've just lost a good bit of the fun on the practical side. I.e., preparing hardware & software decently for pretty long-term usage for me has rather become a recurring nuisance, as new computers(/notebooks/hardware components/peripheral devices) OSes and software applikations aren't as fascinatingly much better, much faster, much more convenient, much more capable anymore as these used to be in the early days of home & personal computing. And hence I'm not unhappy, if I nowadays can skip a few processor and OS generations in case of my private IT environment.

I have a few websites and forum designs under my belt and I try to make them compatible with the big 3 at least! Firefox, IE and Chrome...but it is not always so easy! The internet itself is constantly changing and sites have to adapt or die! Plus, now days, you have to design for responsive, dynamic display so your site can be viewed on smart phones, net books and tablets of all sizes! What looks good on a smart phone, looks bland on a PC monitor! So, it's a constant game of give and take and one thing is for sure...you can't please everyone! That is the hard fact out of all of this!

Google will severely downrank your site if you're not "mobile friendly". So I had to take my vintage geocities type site and butcher it into a portrait layout with nothing wider than x number of pixels. I have to admit it still looks cooler than the glossy flat stuff you see today.
