Akai GX-270 D good reel deck?

The boxes are strong and i like the hinge how it holds the reel.

Oh man im in love with this guys music, real funky jazz :D
On another tape it says "santana", i really want to play that next.

Few things i am concerned about:

Is it normal for it to take a few seconds after pressing PLAY to actually start turning the first time?
When it has run i can pause/stop/play instantaneously. i know its an old mechanic beast and not a cd player so expect some delays :D

And fast forward goes well but rewinding near the end of the tape its struggling a bit ... But it does finish and the auto stop works.
Just finished my first tape, i labeled it. Tomorrow the first clean because there is some muck on the heads ...
And i'v been using the philips reel, the akai reel is bent :( it wobbles and the tape scrapes against the sides. Maybe i can bend it back.

good night!

When the machine struggles to rewind a reel, there's a good chance the tape is sticky. Be very careful with those tapes- if one leaves residue, don't play it.

What exactly is the delay when you hit play? If you're changing play directions, yes, there should be a little delay. But if you hit play in the same direction the capstan motor is running, it should be instantaneous.

yeah its when changing direction, its press ...click...play

Well the rewind is slow at the end in every reel i tried so far.

At the moment i am cleaning the metal reels :) they were a little yellow and has alot of sticky residue.
Just need to get alcohol really soon, i saw a big brown smear on one of the posts .... so am not playing any tape until its clean.

Any ideas to open the case? Does the whole front come of? i want to peek inside.

Any dirt on the guide posts will slow down the winding, hopefully it is only that. Be careful with that era of scotch tapes as some suffer from sticky shed.

Yeah, clean it up all the way and try again. It'll sound better once it's clean.

That delay is supposed to be there- you're waiting for the capstan motor to reverse and lock on speed.

Many Akais with the wooden case have screws on the back & bottom that, once removed, allow you to lift the case off the machine. That one looks a bit different. It might be those six screws on the edges of the face place.

That thing is really nice! Congratulations, you're really going to enjoy it. Also, you got a great deal on it.

yes hifi engine has a manual but its only about cleaning the heads and running the tape.

It has got 2 screws on the bottom and the 6 on the front.

My father-in-law bought one of those in the 70's along with an Akai GXC-310D and Sansui AU-7700 / TU-7700. I have the Sansui gear ... the cassette got turfed years ago and the R2R he decided to keep and it sits in the closet at his place. The owner's manual scan on hifiengine is from that machine. Hopefully some day he'll get it fixed up and I can hear it.

Just got back from the Pharmacy with 100% isopropanol :)

12 swabs later it looks alot better. It was really dirty, the record head had dried CHUNKS of residue.

Had to resurrect this old thread as I just picked up an Akia GX-270d and a bunch of old tapes from an estate sale. Most of the tapes I have played are early 60s mix tapes and are a lot of fun.

Just curious, @SX550 do you still have to deck from this thread? Still using tape?

I am having a lot of fun with this deck and all the old tapes. About half are labeled and you just don’t know what you’re going to get.
