Just an update..

Have emailed Akai Australia asking if they can track down a schematic for these speakers. If I have any luck I will add to the database!

Keep fingers crossed but meantime.. anyone who can help, please chime in!

Akai CR-80D 8 track recorder side panels

Just bought an Akai CR-80D 8 track recorder in 'almost' great condition. The only bad part is the front left wooden side panel has an ugly three inch gash in it. If I could flip it over and turn it around, the damage would now be pointing to the rear of the unit and the perfect back end would now be in the front. Thing is, there are no side screws I can see to take it off. I've enclosed a photo of someone else's unit to illustrate what I'm referring to. Anyone know the secret to get the side panel off? Thanks!

Thrift find cross post... Grills aren't attractive unless you have a thing for fuzzy brown stuff.

Sound surprisingly decent, for $9/pair

any of the experts here know anything about the SW-127? 8" woofer, 1 3/4 tweeter and the diffuser thing. Cabinets seem to be NOT MDF, walnut veneer,

Woofer Surrounds appear to be some woven material that has a rubber material painted over it to give it elasticity. Woofer is also some woven material.

Serial numbers still affixed to the backs - Made in Tokyo, Japan.

For pete's sake, again someone with akai sw's and i can't even find one pair in the EU in the last year... :( OR they would be +€300

SW-155 and SW-156 cabinets are plywood. Woofer surrounds are made with cloth and painted with black goo. Probabbly that goo is hardened over the years, check this.

I heard SW-155, SW-156, SW-170.. All of them sounds wonderful. These are not regular kabuki's.. No wonder yours sounds decent. Nice score :thmbsp:

I love these SW series.. Especially vocals...Sounds fabulous..

The surrounds are still very nice and pliable! I'll correct myself on that the cones are paper, and ribbed.

vocals do sound immersive on these and clear. I only have my Paradigm Titans as a reference and its not a fair comparison, but the sw-127's sound really nice, especially if jazz and orchestra music is your thing. Diana Krall is especially smooth.
 
Anyone have any info on Akai sw-tf5 speakers?

I found a pair of re-foamed ones.
They are 70w 8ohm. 3 way with 2 woofers column speakers supposedly made in the 80s with wood veneer.

OK - after lots of searching, have manged to find the complete manuals for the SW series with schematics and even drawings of the crossovers. As my SW650S's are the same as the SW157's (think it was just a marketing name change for the Australian market) I have rebuilt the crossovers, located a apir of tweeters (Akai no less!!) and reassembled the speakers and fitted new grille cloth. They sound amazing - very clean and a very good range!
Just have to pretty up the cabinets and this is where I need some advice. They appear to be covered in a kind of silver/grey veneer or vinyl of some sort but it is scratched and scored (light to mild). Wondering if I should try to very gently sand back the scoring with very fine wet/dry emery paper and then spray paint. Any suggestions?

please post up the Service Manual for the sw series, I think AK can help with that as they have a section for those... I have seen but never had the opportunity to contribute!

I'd like to get inside my sw127's to see if the crossover cap(s) are worth my time to refresh. I'd also like to see what the backside of the speaker drivers look like.. i imagine some stamped basket..

If you are to spray with paint, then go ahead and sand away. Else if you can just get them flat enough, then hit them with a rewrap of veneer.
