These sound very good when properly amplified, and after removing the downward-firing "louvers" from the tweets.....

If i get these i will have to have some patience until an affordable akai amp comes around, something like a am 2600.

I would LOVE this combo, then i would be settle with an all akai system

Your pictured Akai Integrated Amp/Tuner combo is the exact one I run in my family room......used for listening to radio, an occasional movie, and (mostly) for when my wife has friends over to sing karaoke.....

I run this with a set of Infinity RS-4000's (Emit tweeters), and a Polk sub....REALLY nice sound (!)

There is a AM2800 for sale at the moment but he wants €150... Its above my price range but it looks really good.

80w would be nice to drive some big speakers... i guess they would destroy my sonoco's

There are alot of these going around very cheap. Might be my perfect thing for speaker stands.

I remember Akai as the quality reel to reel tape decks when I was growing up in the 70s. I have owned a GXC-510D vertical cassette deck in rough shape but working, and I still have an AT-2650 tuner that is extremely good. I would comfortably say it is the best tuner I have owned. Looks pretty darn good too!

No pictures right now though.

Looks like there are more Akai owners out there than was originally thought to be. I think the owners of this stuff tend to hang on to them, or collect them.

That was not really a bad price if it was in decent condition.....to buy something brand-new with equal sound quality, you would spend over $1,000.....and it still would not be beautiful like the Akai.

Also, that was the 2800.....a very conservative rating of 80wpc.@8 ohms.

Mine is the 2600, and with an equally conservative rating of 60wpc @ 8 ohms, it really sounds like a powerhouse.

One caveat, however.....Akai amps tend to be extremely accurate, but (IMHO) a bit sterile....that is to say that they sound fabulous as long as you are using a speaker that is a bit "bass-forward".

I have had great sound with my 2600 using the Infinity Reference 5's, Infinity Crescendo CS 3007's, and now with a vintage set of RS 4000's and the Polk self-powered sub.

If you see one again in that price range, you should grab it...they are not making more of them, and none are growing younger.....

...99% of all speakers blown are done so through too LITTLE power....not too much....a low powered distorting amp is a speaker-killer....

I just gifted my AA-1150 and a pair of Cerwin Vega DX-7 to my son for his basement mancave. :tears:

I hope he enjoys it. He was smiling ear to ear when we hooked it up and tested it. I'm going to miss that receiver but it's my son's 1st vintage setup. :thmbsp:

I still own Akai AM-69 amp, recapped & refurbed. Not like those nice looking vintage series.
Instead; black, ugly, heavy, beasty. Build quality is extremely good. Sounds fabulous, powerful, clinical!

I found something in which you may have interest.....

It is on Ebay USA and may be a bit more than your desired price range....However........

It is a Guaranteed excellent condition Akai AA 1200 (!)

This unit is truly a powerhouse, very conservatively rated @ 120wpc.!

This model has excellent clear, warm sound, is built like a brick #*%&house, and is beautiful as well.

Another wonderful thing about this unit (and in my experience ALL Akai amps I have owned) functions well driving a low-impedance load.....

That is to say that you can stack 2 sets of 8-ohm speakers (as opposed to side-by-side, where you would lose the great imaging), running both A and B speakers, and giving the amp a 4-ohm average load.

This unit will put out an honest 165wpc. at that kind of load, and retain all of its great sound characteristics!

I have on many occasions driven 2 sets of 6-ohm speakers through my AM 2600(for a 3-ohm average load to the amp) with NO problems whatsoever.

This AA 1200 is pretty much bulletproof, and your ears will give up before it runs out of power!!

Another wonderful feature of this unit is that it has Bass, Mid, and Treble controls, and they are even separate for each channel!

Of course, the beautiful wood, aluminum, and many analog meters...(!)

I attached a pic of the actual one for sale on eBay.

The seller is asking $300 US, and as It seems you are in a different country, you may see shipping as high as $100us, as the receiver weighs around 45 lbs.

This may be a budget stretch TODAY, but you will not be looking to upgrade any time soon, believe me.....an excellent piece!

Thanks for sharing but that's more than my entire system costs today
And I never ship anything, I always get it myself.
When i got my TT it was wrapped in blankets and pillows for a 2 hour drive home

Just came home with this boy!
50wp of wood and aluminum goodness.
only 1 little scratch and needs new lamps ... 6mm 12v AC, have not found them yet.

Check out the heatsink!

I love these shafts, japanese engineering ...

It weights a ton...

Very Nice!!!

I just replaced the bulbs in my AA-R40 at the office......

I purchased small screw-in sockets that fit the existing rubber grommets in the AA-R40, and soldered the existing wires to these......

Next time bulb goes out.....just screw in a new one.

Also, I purchased bulbs rated @ 14.7v.....they are just a TINY bit dimmer than the originals (once all were replaced, could not tell the difference), but I am told their lifespan will be quite long.....

Found the bulbs to go with the aa10** receivers.
These guys are a little harder to open than pioneers, the tuning dial has to be knocked off the flywheel with a hammer
And the switches are locked with bolts. Talk about build quality...

Now on the hunt for an original AKAI wooden rack and sw speakers that are +50w, but none within driving distance.
im still rocking the old 25w sonoco's I still can't find any information about.

If anyone has a owners manuel pdf for the 1050 or 1040 i would love to know
