Allied 498

I recently picked-up an Allied 498. It looks like it was actually made by Pioneer and marketed under the Allied brand. It uses the speaker plugs like my SX727.

Does anyone have any information on this model?

Thanks

My friend has one. No highs. Really heavy. I am wondering as to what it would sound like if it actually worked. Tuner is also shot. What does your sound like?

This is a working unit I pick-up at goodwill. The only issue after a deox treatment is one burned-out bulb. It sounds OK for a small unit. I'm guessing 20 to 40 watts.

Hi Mike,

My dad bought a 498 back around 1969-70 just before they were bought out by Tandy. It's an electromechanically tuned receiver. At the time they rated that receiver 350 watts - of course that was before the government stepped in and got on receiver manufacturers about inflated power output claims.

When I broke up the estate a few years back (2003) I took his ole 498, bet it still works. I might have the owners manual for it, let me take a look and see. If I do, I'll copy it for you.

Hi Mark,

I would appreciate a copy of the OM if you have/find it. The tuning is neat. Just hit the button and it tunes in the next station.

Thanks

While I'm not entirely sure of the model, there are a few of those that are actually quite respectable, and I think that might be one of them.
