Allison Five - Great little speakers

Thanks for the pic - - are all of those components globbed on to the back of the tweeter magnet? Also, I'm wondering if that resistor is original - - the product lit for the 110 mentions an LC circuit, but no R.

Its on the back of the terminal plate, not sure what their LC means I just know what the blue thing does. When you are driving it hard the speaker will go quiet until you turn it down some and almost immediately the speaker will start playing again.

l purchased a pair of Allison Fives online a few months back and am completely blown away by the sound that comes out of these little boxes. I listened to a bunch of "bookshelf" speakers prior to buying the Allison Fives and wasn't satisfied with any of them .... but once connected up to an appropriate amp, WOW. They were crisp at the top and had unexpected bass for such a small package.

I love my Allison 6's -- unbelievable how good the sound is out of them (even smaller than the 5's) -- but I'm not going to go on the internet and tell anybody that .

LC merely refers to an inductor (L) and capacitor (C) in circuit. An LCR notation would also include a resistor (R). The thing you're describing almost sounds like it acts like a fuse for tweeter protection - - - I think I've seen similar components used in some a/d/s speaker models.

Great refinishing of the speakers. I like the plate protecting the woofer during the one step!

I don't know much about that brand. I'll have to watch for them.

Ha ha. Yes the plate was a lucky fit. I don't profess to be at all professional, but it worked pretty well for what I needed. There is so little written on the Allison Fives I really was in two minds when I bought them, but I'm glad I did. They can't match the power or clarity of bigger or more detailed speakers, but they are true bookshelf-sized speakers that punch above their weight for sure.

You should be able to upload pictures with the "Uplaod a file" button under the post window. My pic was just a slightly larger version of what we see for your photos (attempt at humor).

Here you go from my 110 above. The blue resister thing is the one that gets hot and limits power input.

That blue resistor looks like a poly switch. It’s like a re-settable fuse for the tweeter. It eventually wears out. Polk Monitor 5’s (mine anyway) had those. When I did a recap of the crossovers, and replaced the SL-2000’s, I replaced that with Mills .5 ohm resistor.

I removed them as it seemed one was activating early and not the other. What does the resister you put in do? I am just careful with them.

I know this is an old post, but the "blue thing" is not a resistor. It is an 8 microfarad/ 100V capacitor.
