Altec 604C's : What the heck am I going to do with these!

Well thanks to denwa04 I have a nice pair of Altec 604C's sitting next to me. Thanks to doucanoe for talking me into it, they have been completely rebuilt by the fine folks at Great Plains Audio.

Now what the heck do I do?

According to GPA they are now more like a 604E, but can use the 604C crossover. They are of the 16 ohm variety. I will end up building new crossovers at some point as well.

Here is the problem, no way can or will I jam another huge box speaker in my listening room. These really like a 9 cu/ft enclosure, Bill's are stunning, but my room is just to small. I'd like to stay around 5 cu/ft and let the corners of the room help extend the bass. Low to mid forties in the bass department would be fine.

Any and all ideas would be appreciated. Unless of course they mention me sending the drivers to you. This is my dream driver and really want to make it work in my room.

ejfud,
I too have a pair of 604Cs lying-around.
If I was in your situation,I'd put the 604s in a smaller enclosure(which limits the bass extension)and supplement the bottom-end with one or two subs.
This would be a space saving compromise.

Have you thought about making some type of folded horn with them? or maybe a very tall corner box? Something not normal but gives you the size needed? Don't build out, but up, or inwards.. ? Experiment is what I would do..

Yummy............................ drool drool.

There's nothing like the smell of a fresh GPA re-cone!

If you're not going to drive them with oodles of power, don't overlook the possibility of a sealed box. While a departure from the norm, it might offer you the best of all compromises.

Congradulations on acquiring the Altec 604's! They're beauties!:thmbsp:

As far as application is concerned, you might want to consider an open baffle setup as a first cut. It shouldn't cost much to build and be pretty straightforward to construct. The drivers' 16 ohm impediance combined with the open baffle mount screams for low-power tube amplification. That can definitely be an acquired taste and isn't for everyone, but some folks think an Altec 604 speaker, driven by a directly-heated triode amplifier, is a thin slice of Heaven. :music:

I don't know what we will come up with but I think its time to break out WT3. At least it might provide some usable DATA (thats for you Zilch) to run through a box program.

I still think that a 5-6 cu-ft ported cab might give you a very usable amount of bass. Particularly, in your room just as long as it doesn't look too wacky on paper.

I told you before that I could have given you those red mystery cabs but you decided to pass. Now, I bet you are regretting that decision. ;)

Unfortunately for me OB's need some room behind them and on the sides and with wide baffles, that ain't going to happen in my room.

Congrats! A pair of those is next on the list for me. That folded horn idea sounds interesting.

I think the suggestion of just mounting them in a small enclosure and let them handle the mid/high range might be of value. You could get a sub woofer with outputs that are controlled by the sub's crossover to limit the frequencies to the Altecs to the upper range. It might work, although I would LOVE to see them in a proper cabinet ported correctly. Good luck, they are beauts!
