Altec serial numbers: 601xxx

Anybody know what the deal is with Altec serial numbers starting with 601xxx? I searched the big list (http://www.audiophool.com/Misc/EIAcodes1961.pdf) and there is no 601...at least not at that time.

The website/list you reference has nothing to do with S/N's. It's a list of manufacturer ID codes of which Altec's was 391, it never changed.

Sorry, I should have specified that I am looking for who used the code 601. I'm looking at an Altec 605A in which (what I think is) the serial number on the edge of the basket starts with 601.

It's likely an "in house" inventory or control number. Altec sprayed the paint that's under that number, so it's their number. But, we may never know it's relevance..

Gotcha - that makes sense. The speaker has all the Altec markings on it otherwise, so I know they must have made it. Confusing about the number though. Sad that things like this have been lost...
