These aren't the type II, these are the first generation with a much simpler overall "box" appearance. The later type II was more elegantly trimmed and the grill was curved like an 846A, they tend to bring the premium.

But, that said i like to estimate value on the conservative side. So, you may well be right about these being closer to the 3K mark.

Would like to see an AKer or AUB member get them, i think they're an uncommon deal.
 
Good point but the one thing I seem to notice is the type Is are rarer. They just don't pop up as much. Not like the IIs do either but that is what I see usually when Magnificents pop up.

It's nice to be a minimum 8 to 10 feet from them, closer can be made to work. a 300 to 400 sqft room is ideal, bigger is no problem, smaller can again be made to work in many circumstances.

If the seller had any decent pics showing what they really are, i'm pretty sure somebody would have talked him into posting a BIN at the opening bid and they'd be long gone.

If they were within reasonable driving distance of me i'd be posting about them w/my own pics in the Speakers forum............................

Hum, not far from me! I really don't care how much they are worth as I don't flip things just for money, I just purchase things that I think sound good. So the question is how good do they sound with a smaller tube amp, less than 50 watts per channel?

I wonder if they would sound better than the pair of Sansui speakers I am using now.

Money talks. With Altec speakers I'd say if people are willing to pay up to $3k for them, then they must be pretty substantial speakers.

FWIW, i stress the price/value particularly so that folks like yourself can take a step into the unknown with at least some assurance that they'll be under no monetary risk in the long run. In so many words a fella should have no trouble recovering his investment if he decides they're not his cup of tea. Think of it as insurance on your satisfaction.

That said, look to the Magnificents for very high sensitivity, HUGE dynamics, and very full life-like midrange. LF roll-off starts in the upper 50hz region with no hope of redemption. HF is typical of vintage Altec rolling off pretty steeply above 12-15khz, and can be nicely enhanced for hifi by using an eq'd/compensated network like the N1201 or similar.

IMO, some of the best reproduction you can get for vintage jazz, big band, and well recorded acoustic sets is via Altec full horn systems.:yes:

I've had neighbors ask how often we have band practice at my house. You should see the looks when i explain that it's not band practice, i was just enjoying my Altecs.:D
 
Those pics don't give anyone a chance to really get their head around what's being sold... better pics would've had them sold right away!
 
People seem to forget that these speakers fetch that kind of price say in South Korea. In the USA, let alone flordia...finding a buyer who will pay that, is near impossible. Finding the buyer is one thing, getting the buyer to pay the funds is another. Most of your buyers will come to your home, and the argue and scream about the price. Also the condition is an issue with these. I sold a pair of L50 JBL's the other day for 100$...thought it was fair seeing I was asking 200$....the buyer started going pshyco about the woofers needing foam...and it was stated more then once in the ad.
 
They look really rough to me, as does the home they're in. How hard would it be to clean up the garbage sitting around them. Here are a couple of pictures from the web that show what they are, domesticated A7s.

Those are IIs, essentially the same sans a few finish details. These are Is, like being sold in the auction.
