Altec Type I Magnificents in FL $999 RUN!!!!!

Gentlemen, the components inside the cabinets are worth more than the asking price.

And I'd add.
To the right buyers, they are worth considerably more than the asking price.

I'm not sure if this analogy works fully. But this scenario reminds me of the rare Ferrari frame, frame only, without a body, auction that sold on ebay ebay about 10 years ago.

The seller had no idea what he was selling, and no one else did either as it had only attracted a handful of bids. But the final buyer knew exactly what it was, and bid/paid accordingly, and quite a bit more than any 'normal', 'rational' person ever would, for a rusted, no engine, no body, rolling frame. Turns out the car the frame belonged to was worth close to 2.5 million dollars! :D

I would sure be all over these if they were 'pick-up only' and within 1000 miles driving distance of where I live.

They aren't, however. :tears:

I contacted the seller, he is in Ohio and the widow who owns them is here in Florida where they are located. This is the answer to my question regarding what drivers are in the speakers, quote, "I am in Ohio, speakers are in Florida. so I can't take a look inside the cabinets for you. I have listed them for the original owners' widow, she has told me the speakers were never cobbled. He was a theater projectionist for over 40 years, the speakers were used in his home theater and he was a very fussy audiophile until he passed away. She also said damage to the one front cabinet grille occurred during moving, he was absolutely upset over that happening, but nothing behind was damaged. They are presently hooked up and working. Hope this helps."

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if no one even bids on them. The last pair of speakers I purchased, no one even bid against me, and I was bitting my nails getting ready to bid some high price, and I got them for the opening bid!

I like the provenance of the quoted story.:thmbsp:

I'd bet after others read this thread you may have some competition, this time.

I hope for the sake of the widow, a lot of people bid and she gets a good selling price. But I will state, I doubt it! Most of the time when something is really hot the bidding starts early and by now the item would already have 20 or more bids and people would be posting wow are those really worth that much?

I see someone is trying to offer them less money than the opening bid if they don't sell them.

They are about 20 miles from me. However, without seeing them first, I cannot bid. I emailed the seller to arrange a viewing a couple days ago, and got no response.

I'd bid sight unseen based on pics and sellers comments. The grills can probably be repaired. Those are excellent components that can only sound better with xover work - simple. I might even trade my M-19's for them. If only I could have a pair of each but FL is too far away. Same prob with 90% of posters here.
Auction ends in 10 min.

Yup not surprised, a lot of people here in Florida are not even paying on their homes yet alone purchasing speakers.

But I do now have contact info of the seller, so who knows maybe I will work out the deal. In the past if I have worked with a seller when I was unsure of an item and then decieded I wanted it and have them pop it up on ebay for me with a BIN price so that I could purchase it right then and not go outside of ebay, as I wouldn't want to ask a seller to do that, plus I like to have some protection which when using ebay I have. My wife was with me watching the end of the auction, she is Asian and I think she was wanting me to get them after seeing how nice they were from that pair for sale in Japan

Perfect!:thmbsp:

I always suggest that interested parties email the seller with a barely relevant question just to open the dialog exchange so you have the ability to contact the seller after the auction ends with no bids.

Ken, also note that the pair you posted pics of from Japan are the later series II version, essentially the same thing with a bit more trim detail on the cabinets and a curved grill in the Valencia style.

Yeah my wife really thought they looked nice!

Would have been the case here except the auction was crippled from the start by very poor photos and a clueless description.

Then it was further screwed when the seller identified them as Valencia's.

Just the nice clean green 803B/416A woofers would bring the opening bid alone.

I feel bad for the widow, the seller did her no service on those speakers and left them ripe for the pickers.

Other recent sales:
Single 416s for $270 and $170. Pairs of 802 drivers with no horns: $600, 475, 425, and 383.

bowtie427ss,
I've had neighbors ask how often we have band practice at my house. You should see the looks when i explain that it's not band practice, i was just enjoying my Altecs.:D[/QUOTE] I like That. Sounds like it would of made a great commercial...Fever
