What model are they? Generally American Acoustics are low-fi. Unless they are in cosmetically mint shape, I doubt they are worth the refoam. They could be great garage/rock speakers though....but not for critical listening.
That said, each person has his/her own tastes and some do like them. I opened up a set that I had (large floorstander about the size of Polk Monitor 7......can't remember the model) and they had cheap drivers, piezo tweeters and one cap for the crossover.
If you want to learn/practice the art of refoaming these would be good candidates for a first time refoam job....IMO.

Not very good speakers, but refoaming will certainly improve the sound relative to the condition they're in now! It won't cost you much to refoam them if you do it yourself, and if you don't like 'em, you can likely recover your cost by selling on E-pay after they're refurbished.
