Ancient question: tubes or solid state?

LOL. We will indeed be biased in this forum (into pure class-A SET goodness! :D)

But seriously, one reason is that tubes produce sweeter, more pleasing forms of distortion to the human ear. So while they measure badly on paper compared to their SS counterparts, they actually can sound less fatiguing and more enjoyable.

Judging by your signature, go SS .

If at first you don't succeed....

Socioloco....try the search function. MANY topics on this subject (and arguments) :D

best to get both , just in case ...

Are we playing guitar or listening to the stereo? My answer might vary...
it might vary if I had the budget for a tube stereo setup as well :scratch2:

Answer is that there is good and bad of each technology so simply, whatever floats your boat and has the synergy in the system you are developing. I've been lucky enough to have very fine examples of each during my life.

Kind of what I was thinking. Amateur radio...AM or SSB? AM tube rigs have awesome audio!

That's right!

Remember, the signature says "if you can't" hear the difference... :music:

I like both, I play tubes mainly in the winter. I do not have central air and I am uncomfortable with heat from tubes in summer. Tube tuners,(Scott and GE) lovely tone but not as selective as ss. Some el84 integrated amps and receivers, Radio Craftsmen 500A power amps.

Can't be an ancient question because although this topic has been whipped to death, neither of these are ancient. Heck electricity has only been around a bit over a hundred years, by no means ancient. So I guess we can't hash this out again. To each his own or both.
