Another Maggy Thread

There are a lot of Maggies out there nicer than this one.:D The first two that come to mind are Ken's (Urizen) 6V6 Monoblocks.:drool: Did you ever get any oil on that Mahogony Ken? Well, I haven't splashed solder on the A25s, so I'm keeping my end of the deal.:D


Ken gave me a wonderful set of A25s that he had worked his ass off on, but remembered my Heresies that I brought to the Southern Fest. They had solder slung all over the grills, so Ken tells me (when he gives me the A25s), I better not ever see any solder on these.:thmbsp:

Hell, naw.:no: I was too busy listening to them until Dolly arrived. I also need to find my logos, which are buried in storage.

That modified 175 circuit we used on those sounds mighty fine, Jay.

Oh, and if I ever see any solder on those grills, I'll dispatch Vito (of the Jersey Vitos) post haste.:D
 
Ha, the thread that just won't die.:D I did decide to go with the 6GK6/6HB6 output tube. I found a box full of them, so I figured why not. They are very, very similar to a 6BQ5 (different pinout), just a hair beefier. They can still be had for a couple bucks last time I looked. Amperex made a ton of them, of which many got branded Satchell Carlson. I have found those to be exceptionally good tubes (I have a homebrew that runs them with AA151 iron). I got some more wiring done tonight too.:yes: I've built a lot of Maggies, but never had one for myself, so I'm kind of excited about getting it running.:music:

Real close now, so definately tunes tomorrow.:yes: Just have to finish up the power supply, and cathode resistors. There's just under 1000uf on the main B+ rail.:D Those little Nichicons are 330 each, and came out of a variable frequency drive on a large chilled water pump.

I really wanted to say something about the tubes, but since I did not know anything I thought it best to keep my mouth shut. :yes:

Two thing I see, you get to write on your amp on the bottom all you want :banana: and you have those big caps I always look at and am never sure what to get.

So 1) how are they attached to the bottom?

2) what sort of connectors do they have on them, looks like you were able to just solder to it? I guess a better question might be, what is best if I am ordering that sort of thing for EZ and such!

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Oh, remind me again, how do you pick the output impedance for your trannies? I see plate resistance on the spec sheets, but I was not sure if that was the number you build around.

Nice work! Funny about those caps, I just pulled about 6 of them out of the dumpster at work yesterday( they are on a circuit board for some machine). Need to test them to make sure they are good but I am sure they are. Don't forget to work up a schematic for us non-thinking soldier-slingers:yes:
 
Jay those tubes your using are pretty darn nice!

I'll be curious what you come up for a schem on this guy, :thmbsp:
 
Well, the output section will look just like the 175, except of course for pinouts and cathode R values. I think I'll start out with 130R on each channel and go from there. I use about 470uf of bypass on each channels cathode R too. I made a jig up once with a potentiometer and a bunch of caps to play with the cap value on the 175 rear end. I could actually switch between caps while under way, and this is how I came upon the 470 uf value. It seemed to produce the tightest (most beleivable) bass.:dunno: (at least to my tired old "machine room" ears)
 
470uf is usually what I try an use as well JAY! :)
(unless I'm just scroungin for what I got on hand)
 
She's up and singin.:banana: I had a bad solder joint on the right channel RCA ground, that just about drove me to the bottle.:drool: I had to take my little homebrew circuit board out twice to find it.:thumbsdn: I did draw a schematic of this one and will try to scan it after I make some notes on it. In the fine Magnavox tradition, this amp sounds absolutely wonderful.:music: Here's a couple shots with her skirt up.:thmbsp:

Thanks Markus, that's pretty "high" praise coming from the "Console King". :thmbsp:Here she is all together except for the cage, which I'm getting ready to polish now.:yes: This ones going straight into the "main" for awhile.:music:

very nice JAY my first intro into tube was the same maggie 93xx had to sell it tho to finance my other project .
btw: i like the work bench nice and neat nothing like mine.
