Another Super High End Phono Stage! No expense spared...

Okay, so where's your post with photos and the full rundown on it, huh? :D

I got it to use with the 301 Mk2 if it ever arrives, like new from the original owner, Sony BioTracer PS-X500. I read they sound as good as a Rega P3.

Finished preamp

I've just finished the preamp and he is playing music as i'm typing this message :)

Thanks to HypnoToad i etched myself the pcb.
I'm not so experienced to some other preamps but compared to my old VSPS sound much detailed and warmer.
I've tested different opamps (lm4562, opa2106, ad823, 5532) and i decided to leave the ad+opa
It's powered from two 9v alkaline batteries an i hope they will last because i measured a 15mA consumption per battery.

Now my preamp needs a case :)

ps i dont know it makes sense to build also the Eliott P06 preamp to see the difference.

9V alkaline Duracells (MN1604) have a rated capacity of 0.58 AH, which theoretically yields just under 40 hours at 15mA.

That was fast work, OPA2106 never heard that one. Wait until it gets some hours up it will sound even better.

What cart and impedance setting are you using?

I use mine with my Benz Micro Ace HOMC and found the 18k setting to be best, the 47k although a little more forward doesn't give the same impact.

We need to see pics as well.

If you are worried about battery life try four of these batteries if you can get them they are 11 AH or theoretically nearly two years at two hours per day, I found them for $3.20 each the other day:

Sorry, is OPA 2604.
I'm using a Rega RP1 TT with Ortofon OM5E and i found 47k and 62k sounds best for me (18k cuts the treble).

Regarding the pictures dont ask me where are the Opamps :)
For the 27nf capacitors i,ve used 22nf//4,7nf

Normally Ortofon says i need so have a 200-600pf capacitor in paralel with cardridge. Instead of 10pf should't be 200pf ?

@Voltcontrol- i'm located in Bucharest (Romania)

Cheers

10pf is a nominal value, and you can set the value by deducting the tonearm and interconnects capacitance. For example if you need 420pf total, and your tonearm and interconnects measure at 220pf you need a 200pf on the phono stage input. Most carts need around 200pf total so they don't really need any extra capacitance in the phono stage input.

Because i've found in my drawer a new unused OPA 4134 (SOIC) i think i would like to try the Rod Eliott RIAA preamp. I hope to obtain a very small PCB for this project.

So far i'm pleased with the sound of the preamp already presented and i think a need more LP in better shape.

That is a telling statement! I am glad it works so well you want to hear it with better vinyl. I am looking forward to building the CNC.

I put in an order for 25 PCB's so hopefully in a couple of weeks they will be ready to ship out.

You can replace the 150 Ohms resistor on the (-) input of the first stage by a 15 Ohms resistor, this would give 20dB more gain on the first stage. You can adjust this resistor to the output of your MC cartridge.

Replace the 47k resistor on the (+) input of the first stage by an appropriate loading resistor for the MC cartridge, say 100 Ohms to 1kOhms.

The main problem with creating that much more gain is you are amplifying noise as well. With the 3320ohm/150ohm combination you have the output at 22 times the input. When you have 3320ohm/15ohm combination you have ten times that or 220 times the input. With that much gain noise may become problem IMO.

But as I always say you can try it and see, let your ears be the judge.

Is the 22X vs 220X gain just a function of the 1st stage? Does the 3320/150 ohm combo on the 2nd stage provide another 22X voltage gain? Does the "stock" CNC preamp provide 22X22X, or 484X (53.7 dB) voltage gain ?

That's good. The main goal is to provide the amplification as early as possible, and as cleanly as possible.

Unless I'm missing something, lowering the 150 ohm resistor in the 1st stage will change the gain to 10X22X22X, or 4840X (73.7 dB).

Sounds like I am missing something.....

Both opamps provide the overall gain of the circuit. With the same feedback resistor and same resistor to ground they will have the same gain. The gain is given by this circuit and formula:

Yes that overall gains of the two amps add together, but please remember that some gain is lost (to a varying amount depending on frequency) in the equalization circuit in between the two gain stages.
