Just out of curiosity, does the movement I'm seeing in my tonearms (in the videos) seem normal to you?

Have you tried dropping your arm in the deadwax area (non-groove)?

For an offset arm, yes, that's normal The offset and friction of the stylus on the surface/groove causes skating which pulls the stylus in toward the record center.

Also, the argument is often made that anti-skate settings with a stylus on a blank surface cannot be close to correct because the stylus isn't in a groove and the friction will not be close. However, this ignores that there is friction set up by the tip of the stylus trying to "dig" a groove into the surface and thus, there IS friction present and probably is even close to the friction of a stylus in a groove.

Drop a stylus anywhere on a grooveless record and the stylus will be pulled to the center with an offset arm. Physics dictates it.

Blank disk method with stationary arm gives too much antiskate, see post 198 for a video, on Mircoridge stylus.
And “Slowly drifting inwards “ is a very inaccurate goal..

Thanks! I'm wondering if the rate at which the arms are moving toward the center seems okay with you?

I tried changing the A/S setting, and it makes a HUGE difference! Just a little too little, and the arm flies into the spindle. But, I don't want the arm to have too much A/S, as that isn't good either.

Oh, OK. I guess that seems a little fast but not unexpectedly so. I might adjust it so it's a little slower but not a lot.

I haven't really checked mine out that way in a long time because I adjust it using CD-4 records where it is more critical to have anti-skating perfect so distortion doesn't occur in either channel.

With my BIC tables, I need to have anti-skate set to about 70 -75% of tracking force, referencing the values on the scales, of course, not actual forces.

Thanks for posting this! Soundsmith says the rate should be somewhat slow, but doesn't show a video of what " somewhat slow " is.

I've found that the wider the run-out space, the slower the arm initially moves toward the center. I guess because the drop area is further from the spindle. :idea:

Mine seems to track test records and anti-skating tests well, so I'm gonna leave them as is. [for now ;)].
