There are ways of doing it.
You have to find a Japanese agent who will act as a proxy buyer for you.
I have tried in the past.I think that once they know that a 'Gaijin' is buying,they jack-up the price.I also watched the auction count-down to (say)two minutes,then reset to ten minutes,about five times.
