Anyone doing a garden?

The biggest threat my plants have had comes from those big green horned
tomato worms that show up later in the summer. They can wreck havoc
overnight.Pull em off and stomp em if you can find them. They have a
good camo pattern and are hard to find.I heard a tip last year that
recommended shinning a coleman lantern on the plants at night to spot
them as they mostly work at night.Maybe they glow under the lantern
light?

If you keep the ground around the tomato plants clear and you see small almost round black droppings about 3/8" in size you have a tomato worm somewhere in that plant.

If you find a hornworm with little white things attached to its back leave it alone, those are the eggs of the parasitic trichogramma wasp that will eat it when they hatch and the others too.

Sevin is relatively safe if it works on what you have. Just stay upwind please! With soft bugs like that you can use insecticidal soap too, very non-toxic to people and pets.

I talked to an old timer today about tomatoes and he said you need phosphate
or the middle # in fertilizer to make blooms. He also said that if the fruits develop blossom end rot its due to a calcium defficiency and you can correct
that by mixing one single serving pack of instant/dried milk with one gallon of water and
pour over plants about every 3 weeks. Good info to know

Blossom end rot may actually be related to magnesium. The most common remedy I've heard of is epsom salts, which is a magnesium salt. I seem to see this on the first couple of tomatoes and peppers, and then they're off and running.

.....well, just for the heck of it, I shot the same mite-infested tomato-shot today with an old manual-focus Nikon 135mm F2 lens....went and got my reading glasses today after some initial focusings to make sure, but looking through the 135, the result imo didn't approach the performance of the manual 85mm 1.4 used yesterday, nor did the shots I took....anyhow, the 7 dust got sprinkled out of a sock last night at 1a on all the tomato plants using a weak flashlight....yeah, I know it's Sevin....shaken from a white tennis shoe sock, the white cloud looks neat floating down, and can be challenging with small gusts of wind....in the shot today, it appears the brown adults caught a bus....next.....

Well, squirrels won't eat them, so I planted some tomatoes and cubanelle peppers for veggies, peonies and marigolds for flowers.

I planted 2 tomato plants in containers this year. First time I have tried it, but putting them in the ground last year got me some HUGE beautiful plants, but 0 tomatoes. I think it was lack of sun, as they were on the east side of the house and only got about 5 or 6 hours of sun a day. My container plants this year are getting at least 10-12 hours and are bursting with blooms and maters. I already have about 12 tomatoes on the plants with the largest one baseball sized. Looks like its gonna be a good year for tomatoes.

I used Miracle Gro soil and have been fertilizing with MG every 10 days or so. A good watering every 2 or 3 days. My neighbor grows a large garden every year and has a big pile of old manure, so I am gonna ask him for about a gallons worth and put that on them soon. I can't wait for some good home growns.

.....www.r, I'd like to ask three questions, please....about how long have the 2 plants been in their individual containers?....how big are the two containers?....have they been sitting out in the rain?.....

I planted them about 6 weeks or so ago. I splurged and got the $3 plants instead of the small 49 cent ones and planted them deep with about 4" of plant above ground. The containers are about 5 gal. size. Yes, they have been outside all the time to get rain when we get it, but we have had very little rain the last 3 weeks or so, so just been hose watering. They look extremely healthy but am concerned about over watering. As the temps have risen I have upped the watering as I feel they need it.

Any suggestions as this is my first time of container growing.

Effing thunderstorm last night and TS forecast for today and tomorrow. This may not be due to global warming but is the strangest spring I have seen since I moved here. Two years ago it was drought, should have put in a fish pond.

Ok I have my 3 week update shot with showing growth the shot on the left is from the 11th of May and the one on the right is from the 2nd of June.
