Anyone else not a fan of the Minimus 7's?

I feel like I'm the only one! :confused:

I have a pair of 40-2030C's, with custom audiophile crossovers I installed from eBay seller Litekeys. The imaging of these speakers is fantastic, and the bass is plentiful for the size. But, the upper mid-range and treble? Terrible. It's so harsh and grating. When I listen to these in a near-field setup, it's like I'm standing right next to the speakers inside of a loud nightclub. Definitely not ideal for anything else other than low-level listening. I've used these speakers on various different receivers, and it's the same result each time. These speakers do excel with classical and jazz music. But, for the main genres I listen to, such as rock, reggae, hip-hop, etc. Not so much. Maybe it's the crossovers I have in these speakers?

I used my pair for amplifier testing before I loaned them out to a friend for computer speakers. Pretty poor speakers. Many years (decades?) ago I actually had a pair of Minimus 3.5"s that have long since disappeared. I guess they weren't "half bad."
 
I have quite a few sets....I like them. I find they work good for what I use them for. There are BUNCHES of mods done on the crossovers....not sure if you looked up the PZ 2.1 mod here on AK. I don't expect any 7 to sound like TOTL speakers, but they sound pretty good to me. I attached the mod schematic....just in case.

They do nothing for me. I just flip them after cleaning them up.

I got spoiled on the NHT SuperZero's, instead. The last pair I had, I paid $8 for the pair.

Looks about the same as the crossovers I have currently installed in my 7's, except the tweeter is different. My tweets have a plastic mounting plate with plastic rings around the tweeter itself, in contrast to that flat metal-faced tweeter in the pic. I'd like to think that this is the cause of my problem, but I'd rather not throw any more money at these speakers. Might as well sell them and get something better!

Stock, I agree: the treble is harsh and grating. With little to lose (I found my 7's set out in the trash by a nearby family that was moving away), I tried the PZ 2.1 crossover mod for fun. And it tames the peak in the frequency response that makes it sound harsh and grating.

Now, they sound nice, though obviously lacking in meaningful bass. They're in my bedroom, for a little listening while I fold the laundry.... It was worth the effort, for fun.

ADS made a 200m - m for metal cabinet - that were very close in size but sounded phenomenal (for the size). I had a pair on ADS stands which dumbfounded those who heard it. Traded them for an as-new pair of walnut Klipsch KG4 - worse trade I ever made, and I liked the KG4.

Sounds like the ADS were special . I never heard them.
I had a pair of minimum 7s ( I think I bought 2 pair of speakers from someone. IIRC Dynaco A25s and KLH 5s) the guy through in the M7s free.
I clearly wasn't wowed but in the context of what I thought they'd be I thought they were what I expected. A small okay sounding cheap speaker. Not unlistenable.
I had no use for them and flipped them.
I have a pair of little Missions I really like but they're bigger than the A7s and ( I think) paid about 75 bucks for.

I agree. Regardless of my criticism of the Minimus 7 - which I feel is fairly accurate - I yet like them for what they are, and have for decades. I hang onto a nice pair in walnut, though they aren't in use - nostalgia.

The metal plate tweets were in the "A" (first) models. Some say they sound much better than the plastic surround ones.
 
I had a few pairs and used them as bedroom and living room speakers, and thought they were pretty good. After picking up some Boston Acoustics CR-65's (very close in size and cheap off CL) it was an awakening, the 7's were all given away.
