AR 2-A SCORE and questions...

my pots dont look the same as the ones in the cleaning guide... mine dont have a clip they have 3 PITA prongs holding them together.... do i really have to desolder or cut these out just to see if they need cleaned?
if the old ones are more prone to corrosion etc why shouldnt i just swap them out while im here?

About the caps - - - if you go back to post #43, you'll see that the alert for the possibility of oil caps was mentioned.

About the pots....... in every way but one, yours look identical to all of the Aetna-Pollak pots I've encountered in AR speakers. However, yours are slightly different in that they do not have the wire clip that Glenn mentions. Instead, yours seem to have three bent metal tabs (I've never seen this), and you probably just need to bend these back with a small screwdriver in order to open up the two halves of the pot.

You've got a really great pair of 2A's.

You don't have to desolder, but you will have to bend the tangs to open
these up. You have an earlier type that was a little better piece than
the more common style.

The earlier style like yours are more robust, especially the pot wipers. Most importantly is the condition of the contact disk. Soak as I mentioned above, then wash thoroughly with soap and water, then let's see the discs.
My 3's had these and they were all badly corroded. I replaced them with the newer more commonly used pots that were in good shape.

i think i may have made a bad move... the pots turn down when im cranking them clockwise and up when i turn them counter clockwise... and i cant tell if my tweets are working right or not.... is it possible that i wired this backwards? for some reason it seems like the highs are coming out of my mids... should i just swap the connections on posts 1 and 3 of my new pots? what do i need to know or check here?
 
i labled every wire that was connected to a post that corresponded to post #'s 1,2, 3.... the new pots were laid out different than the old pots but i kept #1 on #1 and #2 on #2 and #3 on #3 of the new pots.... what am i missing?

i had your thread open! using it as a reference lol... i guess i got overconfident about matching 1, 2 ,3 :)

this is how they are now and how they should have been wired to begin with lol... (after taking a closer look at glenns restoration)

i still have to put the insulation back in one cabinet and seal its woofer...
the next step for my project here is re-sealing the cloth woofer surrounds

these speakers are sounding great.... im glad i swapped out the old pots for the lpads... they work so much better than the way it was before... cleaning the old ones just wasnt going to work... the good news is i have 4 of the old style pots that look pretty good and have never been opened for a cleaning.... maybe i can sell those or trade those for the sealant i need from vintage AR
 
when opportunity knocks! I have a few junky discs that hopefully I can replace with these. I haven't gone the l pad route yet, and hope not to.

I have to say, replacing the pots with L-pads on the last project, went smoothly, after Roy straightened me out with the wiring, and the L-pads work great. I would seriously consider it on future projects, unless originality is a must with a pair of 3's for example.

I'm down to forward you the old pots in exchange for the Vintage AR surround sealant. I will pm my address. The quicker I get it the quicker you will get the old pots :)
