Have an original AR headshell I want to put on my XA, but no cart screws. Can anyone give me the thread size & pitch? Thanks.

I can't help with the size but it appears the AR headshell is like the Rek-O-Kut headshell in that it requires different length screws depending on the thickness of the cartridge mounting ears. I purchased an assortment of screws of different lengths for my ROK headshell. If your AR headshell uses the same thread size and pitch I'd be glad to send you some screws. I'll look and see if I can find the size and pitch.

Thanks,
Joe

super dicey memory on this but I think those may be SAE, not metric. Maybe #4-40 ?

I think the "common" one is M2.5

#4 and M3.5 are about the same size.

I have had the same set my uncle gave me with the table in 1976 and have never checked the size. I use M2.5 on all other headshells.

I've attached three drawings that may help you out

AR Headshell Hardware R2013.pdf - The hardware that was included with new TT's or replacement headshells.

AR TT Headshell and Tonearm Wiring.pdf - How the AR XA and XB headshells and tonearm ends are wired.

Headshell Wiring 4-29-23.pdf - A chart that shows both AR XA/XB and Universal (SME type) headshell wiring.

The big thing to remember when mounting cartridges in AR headshells is to avoid using screws that extend more than about 1/10" past the top of the cartridge. At one time I saw something that said 1/8" (0.125") but according to my measurements it's less. #3 screws may be difficult to find but McMaster-Carr has them. Do not over-tighten! Early headshells did not have threaded inserts. Just barely snug is enough. Do not use m2.5 screws! Although the OD and pitch are close they'll strip the threads in the old headshells or lock up in the shells that have threaded inserts.

The screws for the ROK headshell are 3-48. Here's a link to the assortment I bought a couple years ago. The kit isn't expensive but shipping and tax made it close to $20. If they fit your headshell I can send you a set of different sizes.

Thanks,
Joe

I've got a bunch of screws left over from other carts over the years.. None fit. May just order that set. Cheap enough.

If those don't have a metal insert and have been used previously, I might suggest setting the screw in position and turning it backwards at first. You'll feel when it drops into the existing thread cut into the plastic, then you can just spin it in like normal. Otherwise it risks cutting a new thread too close to the existing and just stripping the whole thing out.

on the up side, if its just plastic its not a big deal to drill it out to the next size screw and run those in if it does end up stripped.
