AR4x vs KLH 17

I may grab the AR's. I have KLH 6's.
How do the AR 4's and 17's compare?

I started another comparison thread but this seems like a much closer comparison.

I would expect the 4X to be more like the Twenty-Two or Twenty-Four. As with these, the 4X has an 8" woofer as opposed to the 10" woofer in the Seventeen. The AR is also smaller than the Seventeen, though bigger than the Twenty-Two and Twenty-Four.

I personally preferred the 17 by a fair margin to the 4x. The 17 was a nice speaker, the 4x, in my opinion, really wasn't. Just sounded like an old speaker.

The 17's have maybe the best midrange of all the KLH's IMO. When I bought my set I already had the 6's, 23's, 5's, and 22's. I was just curious about what all the hub bub was about with the 17's. I was pleasantly surprised at how great they sounded. IMO they are nearly the perfect speaker for a smaller den/listening area. I may jump into AR's later this year after a college graduation in May and a wedding in June. I'm thinking the 2ax might be a good start.:scratch2:

The 2ax is also on my mind, but saw these listed and figured I'd possibly check one of these out. Seems the 17's are the winner here so far.

If you do decide on the 17's, they use the same caps as the 6's. They would stack nicely with your 6's. I tried stacking my 17's with my 23's. WOW is all I can say.:yes:

Isn't the 17 and 20 the same speaker, but 4 ohm instead of 8? There has been a pair of 20's sitting at a thrift store down the street from my for months. I keep thinking I should pick them up.

I already have a pair of AR4x's, so this thread is interesting to me.

The Twenty is the 4 ohm version. I'd definitely get them if I were you.

I've owned both. In my opinion, the 17 is the hands-down winner. I sold the AR-4xs.

The 17s have fantastic midrange presence, and are non-fatiguing. A terrific speaker for extended listening sessions.

I sent the seller an email this am that I'm interested in the 17's. Just waiting for pics before I make the purchase. He said they worked well the last time he played them. Said the cabs were very nice. We'll see.

A couple PICs

The seller sent me pics of the KLH's & AR's. Both look to be in pretty nice shape. I'm focusing on the KLH's, but, may consider both.
I asked for more pics of the drivers and more views of the cabs.

The beauty of the AR's is the compact size. If you already have KLH Sixes, I would suggest you get the AR's.

This is exactly what I did in the bedroom, and yes WOW is right.

The 17's have a very unique mid range that is hard to explain... paired with a speaker that has great bass extension they together become a unit that is butter on bread!:thmbsp:

I'm beginning to drool here a bit.

I did this with my big White Van speakers and my DA PS-10's. Together they are awesome. The WV's have a ton of bass, but the mids and highs are ok. The DA's are a bit shy on the base but the mids and high's are incredible.

The white van made a stop in my town a few weeks ago. I had some fun messng with the sales guys about how great their equipment was!
