EPI 100/KLH 17 Comparison?

I have EPI 120C's and KLH17's. The EPI's are brighter, have more extended highs and are a little crispier. The KLH's have better bottom and are smother more laid back rolled off. I like both a lot for what they are. I think if push came to shove i would keep the EPI's, maybe.

I have a set of KLH 17's and a pair of Genesis 1+ speakers....both recently recapped.
Except for extended highs....the KLH 17 speakers walk all over the Genesis 1+'s!
The Genesis 1+'s have a midrange suck-out, while the KLH 17 midrange is about the best I have heard in a 2-way speaker.

Put the EPI tweeter in the KLH 17 and have the best of both worlds!
I'm not really joking here- I did just that (retrofitted EPI masonite-flange tweeters) with a pair of KLH 33s, and they sounded better than original!

I don't doubt you, i have thought of that as well.
I have Genesis II's (inverted dome tweeter/8" woofer/10" passive) and to me it is the best of both worlds and I like it better then the EPI or KLH17. Goes deeper than both, and has the nice highs of the EPI.

Shoulda grabbed them. :yes: If for nothing else you would have the best set of $9 tweeters you could get
I have heard lots of people say and have seen lots of reviews saying that the EPI's lack low bass. However, it's not that the woofers are not capable of it, they are just low efficiency. Using an equalizer, the bass is accurate, powerful, and very listenable (no distortion or buzz from the drivers). But you'd better have some power to drive them! I've had a 20 watt receiver clip tons driving them, and they weren't even ridiculously loud. Fortunately, those inverted dome tweeters are solid as hell and didn't seem to notice anything happened.

My 120c's are of a later date and not the heavy cab/good robust driver version. Lighter weight woofer. It has good bass but not real deep. My Gensis II's are much deeper / fuller. the M100's might be better. The 120c's are pretty easy to overdrive. I have a lot of wattage

The KLH digs just a little deeper in the bass, and the EPI has a sweeter tweeter.
Also, the EPI 100 has better upper-bass response, while the Seventeen has excellent midrange and transient response.
For me, the EPI 100 is a better speaker for rock and heavier music, while the Seventeen sounds great with Jazz and acoustic music. The EPI will take more SS juice, while the Seventeen sounds better with tubes.
Both are great speakers, esp., considering their price constraints.

I have early 100's, recently recapped and re-wired. I've run them with a few different amps. My Yamaha CA-1010 needs a bit of attention now (I think) and the 100's push it to get the db out. With my Marantz 4300 receiver it is another story; masses of bass, unbelievable and huge output without a strain at all. Both amps are around 90-100 w/ch, but they just react differently to the 100's for some reason. Another one for synergy, I guess....
