Are Chinese fuses safe?

My company (gov contractor, Ship Repair) is part of a study which is looking at counterfeit Chinese components that are making their way into the federal supply system and jacking up equipment. I believe fuses where the first thing noticed a few years ago.

I bought a package of Radio Shack fuses for my amp and after I installed one I found out they were made in China? Should I take it out?
Why? What made you think others are any better? If the fuse is 4A, and your amp burns if the fuse won't blow until 5A, the problem is in your amp!!!
 
I'm with faber12 on this one. If they are 2A fuses test them with a 2A load. If they pass than check them with a 4A load. The ones that don't pop are obviously bad. Throw them out.

Some really reliable products we use every day come from China and some really poorly made knock-offs with fake labels also come from there.
With all things that you want to be quality: buy from a known brand and they will have done the quality control. Just make sure it is through a trusted source so you know it is really that brand.
 
Unless it is military or life support rated it most likely originated somewhere in asia , some or all parts in your car's brakes , or your entire computer may all be made in china depending on the brand .

You TV has a chinese fuse in it please worry yourself to death about burning up in your sleep .

I just bought a set of 3 pliers ( made in China ) from walmart to replace my excelite side cutters , that the blade has nicks in that won't cut small wire any more , Cooper group bought Diamond tools and cheapened them ,:( so the edges don't hold up .

The thirty year old diamond are still good the exelite are bad after 10 years .

The cheap chinese made tools are not meant for everyday or "professional" use. But as in an emergency tool kit or something like that. If you are using your tools all the time you have to drop the money for USA or Germany, Swiss, Japan. Excelite side cutters the kind that are pointy and are made with a flat piece of metal, are not designed to last a long time. I just replaced mine with another pair of the same type a few months ago and it works great for prying out just a single strand of 22 gauge wire or snipping off the excess lead on a lug. The narrow tip and head makes it perfect for working around tube sockets and tight spaces.
 
FYI most fuses I buy these days are made in Taiwan, not China. Who ever knew Taiwan would be a mark of quality!

I haven't seen any new USA made AGC fuses in years, they went first to Mexico and now who really knows
 
The pliers and cutters i bought are the same as the last craftsmen pliers i got , i work at home due to my disability when i can . I have klein and thomas betts specialty cutters that i use but flush cutters and long nose pliers i'm a bit hard on .

I buy fuses by the 100 and test one with a variac , after that i'm fine with them .

I don't think you have a choice now a days. Chinese stuffs are bad, but you want to pay an arm or a leg? As I said before, if your instrument burned because your 4A fuse did not burn when the amp drawn 5A, your amp has a big problem!!!! Not the fuse. It's the amp you need to change, not the fuse.

I personally buy fuse on ebay from Hong Kong for cheap and use in all my amps. I burn enough of them to find the right value and develop the surge limiting circuit. I use huge amount of filter cap in my SS amp, over 0.2Farad. The power on surge is tremendous, burned the first power switch in 3 days without the surge protection. I use all chinese fuses and I burn a lot of them during the process. So what?

For me, I am cheap and I born cheap!!!! And proud of it. I would never pay more just to feel better, I'll look into the amp if there is a problem and fix it.
 
One place I've seen people getting into trouble, is using 30V automotive market AGC fuses on 120V, because they "fit". This is of course a bad idea.
 
Regarding tools, I worked in the electronic industry for over 30 years both as EE and manager of EE in charge of the lab. I have my own room in the house that have better equipment than the company I worked for ( no kidding, more a reflection on how cheap the company, not how good my equipment!!!)

I USED to think you need the best. I used only Xcelite wire cutters and needle nose that one of the cutter cost $50. Lately, I want to get some cheaper cutters to cut 12 gauge and 10 gauge wires and I don't want to use the expensive cutters. So I went on Amazon and bought some cheap stuffs. I am ABSOLUTELY AMAZED HOW GOOD THEY ARE.

All these work like a dream, I have no reservation in recommending them even for professional used. I am sure the Xcelite is better, but you know how people use the tools in the lab, you loss half of them just from carelessness, then when in rush situation, you use the wrong tool to do the job just because it's within your reach and ruin the tool!!! So a bunch of cheap disposable tools is a good practice.

So I won't po po on the Chinese tools. Remember people feel the same way in the 60s about Japaness products, 90s about Korean products. Look at where they are now?

The buggs bunny reminds me when one of the local munitions factory that had me work on their gas chromatograph , i was only $75 an hour 20 years ago , the factory tech was $250 an hour , and had to pay his way to and from new york to the midwest and wouldn't grantee they would fix it .

Bad tantalum tear drop caps and bad solder connections on molex plugs , typical mid 1975 technology .
 
I look at it this way, if the Chinese fuses were that bad, it would catch up to them and no one would buy them anymore. The whole world can make common parts well like radial tires, alkaline batteries, accurate resistors. I am not concerned whether a 2A fuse is really a 3 A fuse, because if there's a short, it will blow either way, without causing a fire. I am concerned more about high rating fuses. Like a 10 A really being a 20A. That could allow a fat spark to shoot out of equipment and possibly cause a fire.
 
Chinese fuses are not bad. It’s the large number of counterfeit ones making it to consumers.

You are treating these as if the supplier cares about repeat business. Many of these fakes are produced in batches by random factories which don't care if anyone ever purchases again.

Counterfeit parts are very different from legitimate parts made in China with proper ISO-9001 tracking and certification from U/L, etc.

One aspect of PAT testing that is becoming an increasing problem is identifying counterfeit and non compliant electrical equipment. Trading Standards report that around £30 million worth of counterfeit electrical equipment enters the UK each year and 90% is made in China.

To take a look at this problem, we have randomly purchased 4 packs of BS1362 fuses from a popular online auction site.

Fake Bussman fuses:

Research by Electrical Testing specialists, Intersafe, reveal fake fuses in circulation on the UK market. These counterfeit fuses can be extremely unsafe and could cause severe injury.

The Department of Trade & Industry Standards & Technical Regulations Directorate 6 (STRD6) reported that the presence of fake fuses in 13 amp BS 1363 plugs could be dangerous and cause the fuse link to “blow." This may explode violently and may blast the top off a plug or blast a plug from the socket. Reports suggest these fake fuses could cause severe injury.​

The problem of counterfeit parts is pervasive, but usually ignored in the civilian channel. The Pentagon, however, has an incentive to find them, and this is the source for most of the documentation on how bad the problem has become. For example, here is a recent article:

This, of course, is more than fuses. But the question remains: how can any part be known to function as advertised?

Because fuses are a complicated issue, to simply the issue for everyone, I located on the internet an ISO-9001 guide to fuse replacement. These are all alternatives to using counterfeit Chinese fuses.

Unfortunately fortune cookies are an American invention. Most people in China have no idea what a fortune cookie is.If they do, they refer to them as American fortune cookies.
What's so unfortunate about it being an American invention? It had to come from somewhere.
 
Counterfeit fuse? I think they have much better things to counterfeit than a simple cheap fuse. I never buy transistors and capacitors on ebay, but I would not worry about buying fuse for amps on ebay. You can literally eye-ball and tell the size of the fuse already!!!!

We are still talking about amps here right? We are not talking about other critical application here. So keep it in perspective.

You want to be safe and spend the money, buy from Digikey, no matter where it made, it's real if that's important for you.

Many more reports and analyses are available if you want to read about it and evaluate the truth or falsity of the issue. Industrial manufactuers and equipment users, product testing companies like U/L, the military, and fire marshalls considers failures from counterfeit devices to be a serious issue.

Counterfeiting works at all levels, not just at the high-value items you perceive as being worthy. The "factories" making these are not fancy modern ones, but often a machine in a concrete building, and the factory vanishes after selling a batch of counterfeits. Capacitors are made by such factories. All that is needed is a used machine and place in which to operate it.

The idea of "better things to do" is ridiculous. If someone can make money engaging in a behavior they will engage in it. How do you know they have "better things to do"? The fact that so many counterfeit fuses are found suggests that no, they don't have better things to counterfeit and this is profitable so it will continue.

It is easier to counterfeit low-level items like fuses because the defects cannot be easily visually determined, and the victim rarely complains (or sues!) when it fails to perform in the proper manner.

Counterfeit fuses have been found from all of the major vendors. Again, Google will provide you with more information than you care to read.

We are still talking about amps here right? We are not talking about other critical application here. So keep it in perspective..

We are discussion a "critical application here": your property, home, and continued personal safety and well being.

If a fuse fails to blow the heat from the short may start a fire. Defective wiring accounts for a large percentage of home fires.

So this clearly is being kept "in perspective".
