Ariston RD 11s - Gratis! What should I do?

I've been given an Ariston RD11s for nothing with an original Mission 774 arm. Definitely needs some TLC though! I've given it a general clean and searched for and found manuals for both of these. The turntable is finished in black but shows some signs of cracking in the finish along the top edge of the casing. Any recommendations on how to clean the arm, surface of the turntable? Finally can I set this up myself and what should I replace or adjust? Only cartridge to hand at present is a Nagaoka MP11 as the MC Audiotechnica C07 cartidge on the arm seems to have a damaged stylus.

Or should I sell it as a collector's item and buy a new table like a Project II or similar?

I also got an MF125 preamp but can nothing relating to it.

Welcome to AK. I would look into getting that table up and running. New belt more than likely, lube the motor and the bearing, check the arm and cables and you can be in business.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, just worried I'll ruin it in the process of 'refurbishing' it! :) Ideally I need to get the arm cleaned somehow. It's pretty grubby, plus the paddles and silicon fluid are missing. Any point in replacing the springs or at least the dampening foam? Any recommendations on cleaning the surface of the plinth, the metal area beneath the platter?
 
The dirt/dust is pretty ingrained so might take a couple of passes to shift! :) The cover is in pretty good shape, cleaned up quite easily. It's more the tonearm and the surface of the turntable that is grimy.

If it doesn't work with soap or dishwashing tablets solved in the water, try alcohol or pure medical gasoline on some spots.
Another way could be greasing the parts with some oil to see what happens, together with some toothbrushing.
 
Took the centre platter off to have a look at the serial number, curiously it says it's an Ariston RD 11 not RD11s? May disassemble it completely at the weekend to clean and repaint the wooden parts.

I've been very lucky using a magic eraser that is slightly dampened with water. Seems to remove cigarette smoke very well.
 
Dishwashing tablets work excellent removing nicotine spots from metal if you put a couple in hot water with the object for some hours. Just some brushing with a brush.

But be careful with plastic parts, your hands and eyes.
Use rubbergloves and protectionglasses.
 
Someone elsewhere suggested changing/upgrading the motor control caps. What would be the specification on these? My local Maplin is just around the corner and it sounds like a cheap upgrade. Making progress on the refurb. Sanded down the plinth and the top plate has come back to a lovely shine.
 
In looking at my plinth tonight I spotted this:

But does it say Nov 1979 or 1975? If it's 75 this baby's 40th birthday is next week! Must try and get her back in action for her birthday :)
 
That Mission is a great arm. It may be grubby, but that doesn't mean it won't sound wonderful. The missing damping equipment is a disappointment, but keep your eyes out for replacements.
 
Just pu an Ariston RD11 myself, to sort out the question regarding if its an early type ie Linn bearing etc
pull the inner platter and show us the bottom of the bearing spindle.
Odd that yours shows a 1978/1975 date as the RD11 does not match date wise.

Going to try it without first. Apparently quite easy to make from piano wire.
