Ariston RD 11s - Gratis! What should I do?

Have you got a new belt? Hard to say what's going on with the belt without seeing the table, but if it's an old belt it's possible it has stretched or lost it's suppleness, leading to issues. As for the arm, measure the distance from the pivot point to spindle - you can probably get away with +/- 5mm (about 1/5") from the specified, if you're using a two point protactor for alignment. If you want to use an arc protractor designed for the arm, then you of course have to have the mounting distance spot on. Changing the springs can be tricky unless the new ones are exactly like the originals. I suppose you could add weight to the subchassis if the new springs are stiffer, but for that to work well you need to add it in the right place/places to keep the center of mass optimal.

Thanks for your reply! Part of my problem is there are so many variables! It's a new belt, though I still have the original. I'll definitely add pictures tonight, didn't have time last night. Arm isn't a problem apart from the overhang over the plinth, but that'll become obvious from the pictures, bear with me.

Here's some pics of where she is at present:

D'oh!!! Just looked at my original pictures before I took her apart. The red arm cable connector is on the opposite side! Though every photo of a Mission 774 I've seen shows it on the other side and that was how I've reassembled her. So it's take apart time tonight then. Overhang should disappear at least!

Not to hijack your thread, but I just got my hands on an Ariston RD-11s on Saturday. Damn, this is a nice turntable!

Looks mint, Derekva! Finally got some sound out of mine last night, very pleased but getting phase problems when both channels connected. Where'd you find yours?

I wonder what these are worth nowadays?

Reverse one channel's wires, or test to have absolute polarity in each channel.

BTW, welcome to AK Khitomer! Is that you with JJ?

Going to try that tonight thanks. Yes that's me with JJ at the premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness in London. Brilliant day.

I found mine when I bought a preamp - the seller was clearing out audio gear he didn't need any more. A bit of soldering to fix a bad cartridge tag and some elbow grease and we're good to go.

Amazing! Looks much cleaner than mine was. I changed the screws but think I may have to go back to the originals as I can't get the suspension to settle at all. They're slightly shorter by 2mm or so. Even so the sound from the Nagaoka MP11 cartridge seems excellent. Don't know if investing in a better cartridge would make enough difference to warrant the expenditure.

I'm beginning to think I should never have taken this thing apart to refurbish it! Still can't get the platter to go low enough for 45's. Can anyone confirm that the bolts are secured on the inside of the plinth with nuts or should they only be secured above the springs - hope you understand what I mean? I'm probably to going to have time to completely disassemble it again until the Xmas holidays but want to get the transport side sorted out first, then I'm going to rewire the arm too as that's also not co-operating. Tried changing one of the connectors to get rid of the phase issue, doesn't seem to make a difference. Though when I disconnect one of the phono leads the sound is fine? Thanks for all the comments and support everyone.

It may just be an optical illusion, but your platter (and by association, arm) appear to be riding about 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch higher than the platter and arm on my Ariston. I'm even newer to this particular party than you are, but it seems as if your suspension may be too high.

If you have a multi-meter, tone out the tags with the RCA end. Red & White should be positive (pin of RCA) while Green & Blue should be negative (barrel of RCA). If you think it sounds out of phase, one side is reversed.

I have a multimeter but I'm electrical ignorant! Could you explain how I can identify if it's positive or negative? Plus I'm aware of the height problem, hence I can't play 45's! I replaced the springs and bolts with Linn replacements but silly boy that I am I did not take pictures of every stage of the process so I don't remember is there should or should not be nuts at the plinth side to lock the bolts in place as well as at the spring/grommet end to hold it in place and allow adjustments. Thanks fro your input Derek.

I can't help with the bolts as I've never had the suspension apart. However, on a standard RCA plug, the center pin is the 'positive' and should be connected to the positive pin on the cartridge for that channel (usually the top pins are the (+) and the bottoms are the (-) on a cartridge. The outer 'barrel' is the negative (ground) signal.

You just need to set up your multimeter for continuity (e.g. if you've got a connected conductor, you get a tone), and verify that the left and right signal (+) on the cartridge *when connected to the wiring* connect to the left and right signal pin on the RCA.

Used your pointers, sorted the problem! Now I just have the suspension to sort out, probably won't be any time soon though. Perhaps at the weekend.

I'm not 100% positive, but from the photos I've seen, I *think* the bolts for the subframe have nuts that secure them to the top plate. Did you install the rubber grommets with the springs?
