AT-LP120 and Technics Sl-1200 MK2

The thing with all these integrated amps is how much extraneous crap they put into the signal chain of custody, which is generally almost always subtractive of signal integrity unless comp'ing an awkward loading. The worst fault usually lays in the over-blown over-featured line stages.

The people on Exclusively Sansui only know what they've heard. It's internet hearsay, a popularity poll and not "fact". This is pointless. I can't believe you don't get the irony of your stance on this. I give up.

So it's a fanboy echo chamber like other "exclusive" sites. Sorry if this sounds rude but it has the truth of human social nature when folk of like mind only communicate amongst themselves, re-enforcing prejudices and rejecting differing opinion and fact.

Its ONE subjective opinion. You're possibly one of the most rude people I've come across in my 8 years here, with no possibility of having a reasoned discussion about ANYTHING much less the SL-1200.

Screw this thread and any further discussion about anything with this crowd. Its absolutely pointless. Its about being the winner instead of reasoned discussion.

Arcorob, thanks again for doing this and I'm happy that you were able to salvage your DIY table. I can't deal with this crowd so I'm bowing out.

Rude? Your comment regarding poster's on Exclusively Sansui is rude. I am calmly stating my case with back up from a forum section that specializes in the specific subject. Nothing rude about that.

I´ve had AU-X501, -X701, AU-717 and one more that I can´t remember at the moment. The 501 sounded very good and so did the 717 to my ears. The X701 had a very difficult design to get right. I could never really adjust it to work perfectly, it had a floating ground that kept drifting away.

I liked the 501 the most.

In the last two pages I learned that I want a Dual turntable. That's something. I never wanted one before. I'd love to play with one of those tables.
Me too. Bit worried about what 'er indoors might say, though. We're cutting down to 2, 1 for each system.

This might be a little late, but...Thanks, Rob. I enjoyed hearing the files. I think I like the sound of the 1200 files a little better, but I agree they're close enough to show the AT is a decent choice for people with that budget.

The AU 919 includes a "jump" switch to bypass the "flat amp" circuitry (and the tone controls) to realize an even more neutral sound. You lose about 16 dB of sound but addresses some of the issues you have with integrated amps.

Truth, I do have a very strong nostalgic attraction to the gear from the period of the various items brought into this thread, but I am getting older and going slowly more hearing-impaired as time passes so the results trump nostalgia for me. I am going for the best economical results I can achieve before my party is over and that excludes the bulk of these tasty artifacts of this period from me spending much time with them as working gear as their sonic limitations ultimately limit gratification in spite of the aesthetic appeal.

I suppose this is why only vintage power amps now hold any interest for me beyond being pretty shelf decor anymore, I have a few nice tube and SS integrateds that are basically just that. I prefer a good power amp sensitive enuff to take a line source directly thru a passive 10k precision attenuator for max neutral transparency.

Me too, sound best to my ears, passive pre and a power amp.

You could do worse, I want one and need another TT like a jockey needs a pilonidal cyst.
God help me if something shows up.

The posters in Exclusively Sansui are indeed fans of things Sansui, particularly amplifiers, but there is a great deal of objectivity and a lot of consensus in terms of the relative attributes, merits (or demerits) of the various Sansui amplifiers. The only delicate subject in the section is the "to recap or not to recap" issue. Otherwise, it is quite a friendly technical information sharing section.

Thnx for response, I have recently upgraded my opinion of Sansui generally and do have a couple seriously vintage examples,
My '1000 is an early version obviously based on the SM-80, the '1000 at the linked Sansui site is the later '1000 with the modular FM front end.

John ...about the Duals

In the last two pages I learned that I want a Dual turntable. That's something. I never wanted one before. I'd love to play with one of those tables.

Once you get one you'll be hooked...serious..When I first saw them, I thought - Old school...but the freaking engineering is awesome.

I don't want to ruffle Dual feathers but my preference is the direct drive 701, 721 or 604. 721 is my favorite and the reason I went for it was their top of the line motor and double anti resonance arm

They are also a suspended table in that they sit in their base on springs so its sort of decoupled from base vibrations....

The only thing BAD I can say about the duals is their headshell sled. Instead of a normal headshell with a screw colllet they use a sled. You mount the cart to the sled attach the wires there, then insert the sled and slide the cue lift handle forward to lock in place. Easy right ? well, it could be but 1) Makes it a bitch to align and 2) sometimes you get bad connection on the sled to the contacts - they need to be clean

Its not as bad as I make it sound, just being forthright. I eliminate that issue. Rewired my arm and put normal leads on the end. Then took the back of the sled off so I get more of a connection like an arm without a detachable headshell.

Pictures ! My 721 original and then when I modded - and some other Duals I have bought and sold to good appreciative homes

Wow

OK, stepped back in to see what was happening and ...

... we seem to have catalyzed something with this thread - something that exposes dirty laundry and an attitude display that might have been normal a 100 years ago - wow. This thread has now become a dueling match with black powder and lead shot. Fanboys vs I don't know what ...

I have not been part a discussion this heated on AK in forever. It's not bad, it's therapeutic to let it out once in a while. But gee whiz, some of these arguments and replies are pretty ludicrous :(

Carry on, but I do hope this one dies soon :smoke:

OBTW - I own a DUAL and it is nice, but it collects dust while my PL120 (predecessor to the one being discussed here) runs daily as I clean and test new (used) vinyl and such. I do readily agree that the direct drive DUALs are very nice, if you can get the sled to work well for you - an issue I used to deal with.

Thank you Stoutblock...you got a nice solid table !!!

Just met him in Redmond and did the deal...:D

We had dinner in Redmond just last night... one of the kids loves Claim Jumper, and the other hates it, which, like this thread, proves there's no accounting for taste. Me, I love the BBQ Beef Ribs, which means I'm not claiming to have any taste at all.

I'll admit I went right to the line with my comments that were not in the spirit of AK, my apology to all. What got me riled up enough to make those comments was that IMO someone new or returning to turntables their first stop would be very likly Amazon. A budget in the neighborhood of $200 would give them a few choices includeing the AT LP120 and the Music Hall USB1. I checked out the Amazon reviews on both of these turntables and the rateings appeared to be pretty equal. What got me going was that the OP compared the LP120 to a preowned/used Technics SL1200Mk2 which IMO would not of been a consideration by an Amazon shopper new or returning to turntables. If the OP had done a comparison between these two, the AT and Music Hall, which to me fit the criteria of what a new/returning turntable purchaser would likly buy this thread would never have been as controvesial/heated as it turned out to be.

Thats cool...

Didn't know you live so close ! I work in Redmond, live in Snohomish..small world
