And yes. I consider Frank a friend...I knew he was joking from the title so no worries. Glad he found a good use for the table...he really did give me a great idea on having a dedicated 78 machine...I really wasn't using the AT and was considering selling (with the brand new AT440/OCC) but now...hmmm..

Hi Frank, overall I see this as a very much "no regrets" purchase. Good for you. I also own the non-USB PL120, and I have no complaints. It performs quite well for the price....the inclusion of 78rpm capability is a big plus....not so much for me because I don't own 78's, but for anyone who does, no after-market modification needed. I love my PL120 and am currently using it in my living room. Kudos on the purchase, and it's is sweet condition....obviously well cared for.

I figured it was a legit suggestion for Frank to consider having his SL-1200Mk2 modified by KAB for 78rpm when finances allowed. A couple other excellent direct drive turntables that also play 78 are the Technics SP-15 and SP-10Mk2. These should be considered for professional or serious consumer use by those that have a need for the three speeds. For those that choose a AT LP120 I'm sure they realize that for $200 they arn't getting Technics SL-1200Mk2/SP-15/SP-10Mk2 performance/quality.

However $200 is a price that most anybody can afford. The fact that it's new provides insurance against technical failures, dishonest sellers and DOA on arrival. :thmbsp: The AT LP120 is the turntable I recommend to all of my nonaudiphile friends who want a turntable and so far they've been happy customers.

You do carry on about this. I don't suppose Frank or Rob managed to miss that long tirade in the Audio Technica and Technics comparison thread that Rob did not too long ago? I don't think that would be likely at all.

Calling anyone that doesn't lavish praise on the LP-120 NUTS doesn't seem to be a very adult/positive approach to any discussion. My above comment was directed to someone that doesn't need multiple turntables where one turntable could excell at doing the task.

That is my next step + new cables & a ground wire

So...my OC9 arrives today to replace the one I broke (damn this hobby is expensive) and the 33EV goes back...This is for the new Concept table

Now I have to shop for a 78 cart for the AT...does it ever end !!! LOL

As you well know Rob , this is no one answer

I have 2 -- Ortofon 78 and Grado 78c

The Ortofon does well on good to very good 78s , tracks light

The Grado is a tank :yes: plows through most any 78 , can track heavy

Got to the mods today... Have not finished yet. Undecided if I'm putting new hardwired cables or female RCAs on the backside :scratch2:

Removed boards 1 , 2 & 3

Desoldered where the 'X' is on board 4 - The 2 common tonearm wires were combined there. Where the circle is is where the incoming R+ , R- , L+ , L- and 5th wire ground are. I will be soldering my permanent cables/wire there.

The ground on #5 , circled , has to be reconnected to the new ground wire coming from board 4. Otherwise there is a hum which cannot be tamed. Sorta stumped me for a little while

Sounds really good , better I'd say , than before even though she is in pieces

Went with the RCAs - they were a good fit in the stock slots for the now removed Pitch-Output & Remote Stop/Start

Also... Had a set SL1200 feet laying around and guess what? They were a perfect fit :thmbsp:

Put about a 2oz ball of Mortite in each of the 4 corners of the plastic base - mashed them in tight

The only other thing I may explore is trying to adapt a KAB damper to this TT :scratch2: Probably over-kill tho

Anyhow , she is spinning a Johnny Cash LP at this moment

hey frank....sorry if this is a redundant question, but what size o-rings did you use? i'm thinking of doing that for my SL1200 and PL120. thanks! steve
