AT-PL120 owners w/ AT-440mla cart >>>

High compliance.

cool, thanks. so it's ideal to pair a cart with high compliance with a headshell that is relatively minimal in weight?

also, my turntable is plugged into the phono input on an onkyo tx-sv717pro (older model). to my knowledge, i don't think i can select alternate phono loading. pretty sure it's 50k.

"what are you trying to do?"

just grab some info, honestly and understand what you're telling me. i'm just gonna stick with this one (440) for now. if i decide to grab the shure down the line, i'll grab the jico sas stylus too.

appreciate all of your help, info, and i am sure, patience. :)

Yes - high compliance cartridges and styli, those that track at 1.5 grams and less, mate best with light headshells. Keeping the mass down on the long end of the arm is good with most cartridges until you get into some moving coils or older mono cartridges. Then you need to go back up in mass to make them work - to have something to "push" against.

thanks again for all the replies/information.

i did a little bit of reading last night on resonance tests and matching carts with tonearms, effective mass, etc. i actually did a resonance trial with my test record (shure v15 type 5) and it's showing 7hz (point where cart kinda wobbles/jumps up and down). from what i've read the ideal spot is like 8-12 (9-11 even better)? i wonder if the lighter cart will get me to that 8-12 range. hmmmmm.

anyways, the specs on the pl120 are pretty much sub-par as far as the tonearm is concerned. does anyone out there have any idea how much it weighs? anyways, nice to know that the new headshell will definitely help matters as far as the cart is concerned. should be here in about a weeks or so.

also, any suggestions for a SOLID preamp? looking for something that is quality that won't necessarily break the bank either.

thanks.

I ran the Cambridge Audio 640P with the 120, and several TT's since, and it sounds good to my ears.

ok, i just read this simple explanation re: compliance and cartridge's. anyone agree?

Stiff cantilever - low compliance

Soft cantilever - high compliance

Stiff cantilever is best suited for heavy tonearm.

Soft cantilever is best suited for light tonearm.

thanks a lot for all your replies, broc. very much appreciated.

so at what point, vtf-range, is a cart actually considered low compliance?
