Audio Technica AT7V, Signet?

That's great to hear.

I have one on order from LPTunes. I have not dealt with them before but I'm hoping it's a tad more pleasent than dealing with stereoneedles.com.

Yes they are.

I emailed LPgear before hand to make sure they were in stock. You cannot use Paypal on LPgear and it was suggested that I use the LPtunes site so as to be able to use Paypal.
 
after maybe 30 hours or so the sound has only improved. wider soundstage, and no sibilance. killer cart for the price.

It's for a bayonet mount. Assuming your cantilever is straight, just line it up and go. This is for a Stevenson alignment. Even better, download a protractor from Vinyl Engine for your table. Just make sure you print it accurately.

I see the similarity too. I got a Signet 3ea (I think, not near it now) attached to a Dual 506-1 (me second one, a nice table) free from a neighbor. The cart is now on my music hall mmf-5 and sounds pretty nice, great detail and frequency response without the high end boost of my AT 440mla.

Nice lookin' Technics there Wickster, that AT7V should sound sweet on it! Like static14 says, give it about 30 hours to "loosen up". BTW, I used mine for a while on a TCC pre (760LC) and it's a good match.

AT7V on Jelco 750D

Hi, Intrigued by these carts and looking to replace a recently damaged DL110 on a Jelco 750D. Just wondering if anyone has used one of these carts with the Jelco?

It looks okay weight and compliance wise, the rest of the system is a Technics 1210 into a Cambridge Audio 640p. I like the idea of the Denon DL110 sound with a higher output.

My brother had an AT/Signet cartridge that he dearly loved (don't know the model number). I appreciated the sound as well. I don't think he ever owned another cartridge that pleased him as well. Those were good days for AT/Signet.

Welcome to AK Halvis! I can't help you with Jelco recommendations but I'd agree it should be good match for the arm mass. If you decide to try it please post your impressions.

I have just received an AT7V and I will soon try it on a Jelco SA750D,so I'll share my opinion on using it on a Jelco arm soon.

I've been trying out my AT7V cart with the higher compliance stylus from my AT440ML lately with a lower mass arm and it has the same sweet sonic signature. The midrange just seems smoother than the 440ML cart body on my tables.

Hi Jim,thank you for the welcome.
Many comments about the effective mass of the Jelco.I will try to estimate that by using a couple of test records I have,and post my findings.I would say it is a medium to high mass,and seems to work great with a wide range of cartridges,even high compliance.I'll try to check that asap.
The cartridge "body",is where the electrical characteristics of the cartridge,like inductance,resistance etc... are determined.It seems that the characteristics of the AT7V and AT440 are different and have therefore different sound.Cartridge designers "play" with these characteristics in order to achieve the best....or better still,the desireable result for different cartridges/cantilevers/tips...I have no doubt that the stylus of the 440ML is better,but as you have experienced,it is not the only criterion for "good" sound.Taste of each one of us is equally important:music:

Hi Jim,I have had a brief check regarding matching of the AT7V on the Jelco SA750D.It seems that the AT7V is a near perfect match for the Jelco,having a resonance fr. of 8-9 Hz lateral,and 10Hz vertical!!!!!! using an ortofon test record.That indicates a total effective mass(cartridge,screws and arm)of more than 26gr,taking into account the mass and compliance of the AT7V.So,the effective mass of the Jelco seems to be more than 18gr,possibly 19gr according to an ortofon chart.To find the eff.mass of the Jelco exactly,I have to make some calculations,but it will eventually be between 18-20 gr.This,including its +/- 13gr magnesium headshell.That is good,as by using a lighter headshell,one can tune almost any cartridge mass/compliance.
A bit too early to comment on the sound of the AT7V,as I have listened to it for only an hour or so.I will leave it on the Jelco for 30-40 hours and let you know of my findings,compared to my other MM cartridges.
