Audire Audio Components

I picked up a battery powered phono stage once made by Audire. called the POCO. I think it's official. I'm hooked on Audire. the search is on for a Parlando class A amp ( next of kin to my Otez ) and an Andante Pre-amp to round out the collection.

I have an Audire Forte in my shop with a bad channel ( high offset voltage but good output transistors). These look to be nice amps. Dual power supplies and everything. I believe they were made in Canada. I have heard nothing but good things about their products.

Audire was based in California. Not certain if they were built there as well, but I believe they were. Get that forte up and running.. it's a great amplifier well deserving of a repair/restoration. there's a few variations of the Forte.. which one do you have ( Pics request :) )

If you are looking for rare Audire gear he also made a electronic crossover too if you can find one. I have one and have not seen any others, very well built like all of his gear. It uses cards for the frequencies. 2 or 3 way

me too. There actually isn't much of anything available from Audire on the second hand market. one of their base model amps and preamps shows up every now and then , but its not a brand that you see For sale often. could just reflect sales numbers over the few decades they were in business or.... perhaps it's a one and DONE situation that has higher single owner retention numbers.

Absolutely sweet looking combo :thmbsp:

I've grown quite fond of these units . I hear that the engineer who designed them is "maturing" and in his Eighties but was still doing some repairs up to a few years ago.

I need to look him up and see if I can get some more details , literature and Schematics for them (especially if he's now officially done with repairing them etc). A little non-profit Fan Website might be in order.

I'm still keeping my eyes open for a Parlando amp and an Andante Preamp. I've yet to see any of the Audire speakers on the market. There are 100s' of companies with a similar story, Well designed and built components that found a niche in a particular region of the country , many finding homes in high quality recording studios, where they are still in use , hence the reason there is no flood of them being sold on the market.

I am considering a Parlando in very good shape, but wonder how it could mate with Acoustat Spectra 33's? :scratch2:

Looks like someone bought the Parlando. Maybe it was you:). Or one of the 5 people who sent me messages asking if they should buy it. :) For a second, I actually thought about buying it myself , but passed.

Good sense kicked in. I have 3 Audire amps as it is. I rationalized not buying it by firing up a pair of Aragon Palladium Mono Amps, also class A - 125wpc. :).

I made the right decision. But for someone else who doesnt have an Otez in their stable of amps? The Parlando is Certainly a kick ass amp.

Couple of service issues

About the only things tha failed on the Audire power amps were (I'm reaching for the memory?) MPQ6600 and the Power supply caps. The MPQ's haven't been made in a bunch of years -they are basically just transistors on a common substrate so that as pairs they will track each other thermally. these would get noisy once in awhile and need to be replaced. They look like a IC -but I think there were nothing but transistors inside the package. With age the power supply caps failed fairly often - ususally you'd see the pressure safety had poped and electrolytic had leaked out of them. If one's gone bad replace them all -any equivalent size/shape and electrical value replacements will work.
The Otez and Parlondo are some of the best amps I ever heard. These can draw enough current on powering them up to pop standard 15 amp breakers. The Poco is a very quiet .headamp -not a complete phono stage. Julius did have the attitude that he wasn't making equipment for idiots - so if you do anything really stupid with a Forte on up in his line of amps either bad air will be relleased from the amps or you'll be lookin at serious speaker repair. Fusses were about it in terms of protection.
The Audire stuff was/is very good audio equipment.

Where did you guys find the parlando , Ebay ? geeez years of looking no luck and then this .... :)

My audio friend in CHI gave me the heads up on it and suggested that I get it, as we both own ESL's (Spectra 33's). Yes, I got it on that "e" site :). I had to act quickly or I am sure it would have sold in no time. I am just praying that it is packaged well as it looks to be in very nice shape!

MPQ-6600 source ?

Does anyone know of a source for small Quantities of Motorolla MPQ6600 transitor pacs ? These have been unobtanium for quit awhile now -but ya never know when somebody is gonna clean out the parts bins and a small quantity might pop up ?

Glad it found I ts way to a fellow AK member. Seems as though there are a handful of former Audire users and even fewer current users here on AK

I've certainly been mightily impressed with all of the Audire components I've acquired. The Diffet 3 preamp is also a great unit. A proper evaluation of all of the units are planned and restoration, adjustments etc, applied where applicable.

The Otez shares amp duties with another amazing amp combo. The Aragon Palladium mono amps which like the parlando is 100 wpc class A and arguably one of the best performing amps in my small collection of power amps. Holding their own against dual McIntosh MC7270s which have been a favorite go to amp combo.

the Audire Forte amps are also heavy hitters. Certainly worthy of grabbing if one shows up on the market. I understand why so few show up. Folks that own and use them are genuinely happy with their performance and don't find a need to hunt down an "upgrade".

Noble mono amps

Another Audire product worth looking for are the Noble mono amps -these were lighter since only one channel was on a chassis - lower power (Noble 1 class A -75W , Noble II class A/B -150 W) - the idea was to make a more consumer friendly version of the Otez/Parlondo amps which in many cases went to LA area recording studios. Actually -that might be a idea worth pursuing -look for the big Audire's on sites that sell used studio gear ?
A final plea : Don't dispose of Audire amps -even if they are non working- for two reasons:
a.) The stereo amps are very modular in design ( and a snap to dissassemble) -a entire amp channel minus power supply and caps just lifts out of most of Julius's amps. The obvious point is that even a stereo amp with one channel out continues to be of some value simply because a easy repair can be accomplished by swapping amp modules between identical stereo amps (Crescendo to Crescendo ,Forte to Forte ,etc.) since Juilius's amps are mostly dual mono -it was rare for a customer to succeed in blowing up both channels or have both MPQ-6600 fail at the same time. b.) Even if the only good part in one of his amps would be a single MPQ6600 -that is a very good thing to have. Folks are looking for these to solve both DC offset and noise issues.Short of grotesque abuse -these are the only things likely to be a challenge to repairing a Audire amp. If you don't want to ship a entire "parts hulk" crosscountry -consider removing the modules and selling them seperately from the rest of the amp. Much lighter and easier to package/ship.But don't junk these amps.PLEASE
